During the last few weeks of school, most of us can't resist daydreaming about those glorious summer days. We imagine ourselves setting out on exciting adventures with our friends, living it up, and never seeing a dull moment. Don't get me wrong, there have already been a handful of memorable moments this summer. But whether we like to admit it or not, not every single day is filled with beach days and bonfires. As a regretfully unemployed college student, here's how I've really spent a good portion of my summer thus far:
1. Waking up and not getting out of bed for unreasonable amounts of time.
It's not that I'm too tired to get up or that I'm pondering intense life questions. I kind of just sit there. Doing absolutely nothing.
2. Feeding myself.
This happens frequently throughout the day. Depending on how bored I am, I'll either just grab something to put in my mouth, or burn some time by actually cooking.
3. Actually cooking.
Granted, after relying on a microwave for nine months in college, I consider anything that requires the use of a stovetop actual cooking...even if it's just mac and cheese or hard boiled eggs.4. Bothering my dog.
If she didn't decide to sleep in the middle of the damn day for six hours, it wouldn't be bothering my dog. It would just be playing with her.5. Blasting Disney music at unnecessarily high volumes.
When you're getting a little tired of the Billboard Top 40, I certainly suggest taking it back to the simpler days of Disney. And I'm not talkin' that live action, contemporary, "Hannah Montana" stuff. I mean the real-deal classics. That's what's good for the soul.
6. Actually working out.
Sometimes this does mean going for a run or lifting. Sometimes this means play "Dance Dance Revolution" in my basement or playing badminton in the backyard. It depends on the day.7. Dabbling in yoga.
It's always a lot more difficult than the diagrams make it seem.
8. Shouting at my TV while avidly watching soccer as if I am an injured member of the team.
My apologies to my neighbors and family, but when there is a game on, my surroundings are irrelevant. Completely.
9. Catwalking around in everything I own from cocktail dresses and tube socks to pajamas and heels.
This activity makes me realize that I shouldn't keep clothes from middle school hanging around. They'll never be back in style.
10. Rapping along to the "Hamilton" soundtrack.
If you're asking why, just listen to it. You'll understand.
11. Redecorating and reorganizing my entire room to make it seem less like a shoebox.
Not that anyone but myself and occasionally my dog ever see my room, but for my own serenity.
12. Staying up stupid late watching Netflix.
I could have been doing nothing all day. I could have been tired all day. I don't know if it's just me, but Netflix is only addicting at night, usually when I have to get up early the next morning.
13. Spending each dime to my name on food.
OK fine, sometimes I do spend my money on other useless things I absolutely don't need. So food is probably the most justified thing I spend my money on.
14. TEXTING THE CREW AND ACTUALLY MAKING PLANS TO HANG OUT!
These are good times.
15. Finding out I have to do something pressing like babysit or drive to Speonk or reconstruct the United States Constitution, making me unable to see friends.
These are bad times.
Again, don't get me wrong. I've had my fair share of family fun day outings and bonfires with the friends. But at the end of it all, sometimes, summer isn't as grand and exciting and exotic as we all daydream it to be. And honestly, I've grown to enjoy my days home alone blasting music, walking around my house with a soccer game on TV, mac and cheese in hand, doing absolutely nothing by myself.
