I had never heard of the term "free spirit" until I began college. And by that point, that is what I was being called.
I grew up in a small, Southern town where I was just different from the kids I was being raised with. I never thought too much of it though. I was always just being myself. I was told that I marched to the beat of my own drum and that sort of thing but since being labeled as a free spirit I began to look into what that actually meant. So far it has been the best compliment I have ever recieved.
So I got to thinking about what is it that makes someone a free spirit.
1. You don't live in the past or the future. You live in the present.
You don't worry about the things that you have put behind you and you don't stress about what is ahead of you. You are content with what is in front of you, and you enjoy living your life this way.
2. You listen to your Wanderlust and because of this you'll end up in some unusual places.
You have such an incredible desire to travel and you end up in all sorts of places you never planned to be. You say "yes" to all opportunities to visit a new places and to see the world from a different angle.
3.You have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.
My earlist memories are of me with a book in my hand, reading about something I didn't know and I always wanted to learn more. And to this day, this stands true. You always want to learn and to understand and to expand your horizons and this makes you amazing.
4. You alway want to try something new, even if it's out of your comfort zone or may be scary.
You are always trying something new. You're always eating food from different cultures and wanting to try something different. You're the person out of your friends that wants to skydive and bungee jump. You love the thrive.
5. You are so fiercely and unapologetically independent.
You've always taken care of yourself. You take pride in the fact that you can survive on your own and without anyone's help, You love the fact that you take care of yourself and that gives you satisfaction.
6. You have learned to accept and enable your wild side.
It may have taken awhile but eventually you accept that you are the "wild child." You let go. If you are a free spirit you know exactly what that means.
7. You don't let anyone change who you are.
Being yourself is extremely important to you, and you don't let anyone change you. You're open-minded and listen to others but at the end of the day you are happy with who you are.
8. If someone tries to change you, you leave.
People entire your life all the time that change the way you do things or the things you eat. You don't deal with that at all. If someone tries to change who you are, you have no problem leaving them.
9. You are spontaneous.
You love to adventure and you say "yes" to every new opportunity that crosses your path. You never know where you are going to be or how your life is going to be and you love it. You're the person that people never know where you are. One weekend you could be Arizona exploring the Grand Canyon and the next weekend you're in Times Square and that is completely okay with you.
10. You do not need validation from anyone.
You accept yourself just the way that you are and you don't need anyone's approval. You love the way you are and that is more then enough for you.
11. You would rather spend money on experiences than material things.
When it comes to money, you would spend $200 dollars on a new experience or trip 10 out of 10 times before you would buy anything materialistic. You place new experiences in your life high on your priority list because you've realized that life is so much more than the materials you can by.
12.You know the real meaning of being free.
It happens in only an instant. You step into nature and all of sudden you are connected to the universe that surrounds you. After that moment all you want to do is have another one like it because you know that you let your soul free.
Free Spirits are different than anyone you will ever meet. They view the world in a way most people can't even imagine.
