While a lot of the controversy and hype surrounding the recent Netflix original ’13 Reasons Why’ has died down, some is still being stirred up about the confirmation of a season two and rumors about what exactly season 2 will address. While I understand season two will probably answer a lot of the questions left up in the air at the end of the season one finale, I don’t think that for the good of the show, there should be a season two. Here’s my reason why.
’13 Reasons Why’ was based off the book written by Jay Asher. This book and show tell the story of a teen, Hannah Baker, who commits suicide and leaves behind 13 tapes describing the reasons that led her to do so. ’13 Reasons Why’ is not supposed to be a happy story. ’13 Reasons Why’ is supposed to show the harsh reality of bullying, depression, and suicide. While I am not claiming the show to be perfect by any means, it does exactly what it is meant to. The show is uncomfortable to watch and has graphic scenes that show Hannah being raped and committing suicide. By adding another season, I believe the show is actually detracting from the story and the impact it has. This story doesn’t have a happy ending. It isn’t supposed to make you feel comfortable or better or be tied up in a nice, neat bow at the end. The show is supposed to make you think, as hard as that can be. The show is designed to be a conversation starter and I believe that in only one season, it served that purpose.
Some may disagree and argue in favor of a season two, but I believe that adding a season two is actually lessening the impact and is just creating another show full of teen drama to add to Netflix. There are plenty of shows out there that fit this bill, but this show was meant to serve a greater purpose.
