Over the past week, social media platforms have exploded as Netflix bingers have begun finishing the site's newest television series 13 Reasons Why. The show conveys the events leading up to a high school student's suicide through narratives she has left behind on cassette tapes. While Hannah Baker took the time to list 13 reasons for her death, leaving myself and many other Netflix watchers captivated, I've decided to list 13 reasons why this show has had me hooked.
1. The way "13 Reasons Why" presents women.
Hannah is more than often objectified by her male classmates. Specifically in scenes where she walks through the hallway after the "Best and Worst" list has spread virally through the school. You see classmates taking photos and reaching to grab her butt. However, the camera refuses to showcase her assets in an objectifying manner--which is something I can highly respect.
2. The way it discusses suicide and mental illness is so... real.
Many people are stuck with a solid one-tracked image of what depression looks like. Not all individuals who are depressed lock themselves in their room all day, draw away from others and completely shut down--although there are some who do. Mental illness does not have "one size fits all" symptoms; depression can resemble smiles, seem to be over-dramatic behavior, or can look like nothing at all.
3. It blurs the lines between cliques.
Hannah's tapes have eliminated the lines between cliques in this high school setting. Most television shows and films fail to attempt to do this, as they believe cliques are essential to the high school experience. However, 13 reasons why proves otherwise.
4. Justin Foley
For whatever reason, I have been glued to Justin (Brandon Flynn) in 13 Reasons Why. I actually know someone who went to high school with Brandon, and all I have heard are great things. He's apparently a good guy and an even better actor!
5. The scar on Clay's forehead.
Shout out to the scar on Clay's forehead because without that, I would never be able to tell if we are watching events in the present or a flashback.
6. Justin and Alex
Fun fact: these characters are actually dating in real life! What would a great television show be without a couple to ship outside of it?
7. "Is there a KFC around, 'cause I smell chicken"
Thank you, Jessica, for this phenomenal insult. I'll be sure to add it to my catchphrases. It is somewhat reminiscent of Frank Gallagher's "my house, my kitchen, my fridge, my chicken."
8. The truth is fluid.
You honestly never know who to believe the entire time you're watching. The feeling of suspense to hear the truth kept me gripping the edge of my seat.
9. The soundtrack is BOMB.
Specifically, "The Night We Met" by Lord Huron; I fell in love with it the first time I heard it play. And the scene where Hannah and Clay dance to it? Ugh, my feels.
10. Clay's tape.
I don't want to give any huge spoilers, but I was DYING to hear what Hannah's reasoning was for including him within her 13 reasons... Let's just say: I cried.
11. It gives us someone to hate.
I don't know about anyone else, but I know anytime Bryce or Courtney pop up in camera frame, I get fired up. I love having someone to hate in a television show and they are the perfect targets for this pent up aggression.
12. Netflix produced it.
Let's be real, we know ANYTHING Netflix produces is absolutely golden content. No explanation necessary.
13. (13 Reasons) Why did they leave so many plot holes?
What happens when Hannah's parents listen to the tape? What does Mr. Porter do with the tapes? Is Alex okay? Don't tell me Tyler is doing what I think he's doing with all those guns... is he?
Could this possibly mean a second season? I hope so, but I'm on the fence. The first was so impressive that I'm afraid that, like Freaks and Geeks, if they went any further with it, the content would deteriorate.
I guess we'll just have to wait to find out.
