My mom has said her fair share of sayings ranging from inspiring to hilarious. But there are a couple that I swear I, and probably other Latinos, will never forget and will probably say to their children in the future.
1. Limpia tu cuarto que viene visita.
Ma, you cannot seriously be telling me to clean my room as if your guests are going to come into MY room.
2. Esta casa esta un desorden, Dios mio.
My mom always says this and the only thing “out of place” is an envelope on the dining table.
3. Que cree que esto es un hotel??
First they want you to stay home because you don’t do anything but go out.
4. Porque no llama a una de sus amigas y sale, hija. (Accompanied by a worried look on her face.)
Then you stay home, and they think you’re going through a serious depression and start feeling sympathetic because you’ve been home for too long.
5. Que cree que soy su sirvienta?
You accidentally forget to take your clothes out of the dryer and your mom acts like you’re asking her to shine your shoes.
6. No y no.
Is this just a Colombian thing or do Latina moms feel the need to reinforce rejection with another no. Just to make it worse for you.
7. Ay Dios, dame paciencia.
I’ve actually picked up on this one. It literally means frustration, anger, disbelief and sadness all at once.
8. A ver que hacen cuando se levanten un día y no me encuentren.
Moms take things too far during an argument by saying this. Like okay, you didn’t have to say that because now I feel bad.
9. Ya comio?
Every. Time. I go out. And 6 more times in a text while I’m out.
10. Pero que es lo que hacen a las 2 de la mañana?
I love hearing this from my mom when I’m out late with my friends because honestly, she has a point. We probably aren’t doing anything at 2 am, but it’s better than being home.
11. Menos charla y mas trabajo.
While doing chores or homework, this one's my mom's favorite.
12. Salen con sus amigos y es como que si no tuvieran mama.
Sorry ma, sometimes our convos get too intense, and I forget to call.
13. Porque no me contesta el teléfono??(After texting to call her 6 seconds earlier.)
It takes me a couple of a seconds to even unlock my phone and dial, so mom: patience is a virtue. Please.
14. A rule or command followed by "Y punto!"
You know shit just got real.
