13 Great Things About October
Dan Howard

It's October. Finally, it is October. Which means Halloween is right around the corner and that is something I cannot wait for. October is the one month of the year that I get extremely excited for and for some good reasons. It has so many great things happening and it's the best time to make new memories with family and friends. And as much of a cliche is may be here are 13 great things about October!

1. Pumpkin Pie. Do I need to say any more about why this is here? It's delicious and it's really only around during the holidays to enjoy. Just eat all the pumpkin pie.

2. Halloween obviously. The one day a year where it is socially acceptable to dress up crazy no matter your age and eat loads of candy and be happy. Halloween is the whole point of October, in my opinion.

3. Black Cats. It's like they come out of the woodwork October 1st. Not only is there endless decorations of black cats there always seems to be many more black cats roaming around too. Not that I am complaining about that at all.

4. Costumes. THE COSTUME CHOICES ARE ENDLESS! Literally, there is nothing you can't dress up as anymore. You can go with the classic sheet ghost or some steampunk, Harley Quinn. The ideas are boundless.

5. Apple Cider. Hot. Cold. Slushie form. Or spiked. So many choices to choose from. What could be better? Not much but there is something that makes apple cider better (look at number eight!).

6. Halloween Decorations. Holy moly man, there is an endless amount of Halloween decorations that are available to pick from. Things for your lawn or house. You can make your own haunted house with the different decorations out there.

7. Haunted Houses. I, don't really know why I am including this. I hate haunted houses and scary things but it's like a right of passage to get scared shitless at a haunted house or hayride even.

8. Donuts. Need I say more. They make life better as is, but the cinnamon ones that are around during the fall season just seem better. And then paired with fresh apple cider... what could be better?

9. Pumpkin Picking. Tractor rides to a field full of bright orange pumpkins and trying to find the perfect one is one of the best parts of October! Especially when afterwards you get to carve them or paint them to your heart's desire.

10. Hay Rides. They can be for leisure, for pumpkins or for you to get scared. They are just brilliant aren't they?

11. Harry Potter Marathons. Why is that around Halloween and Christmas it seems that it is almost a requirement for a Harry Potter marathon? I just can't resist pulling them out and watching them all in a row.

12. Trick or Treating. Literally the best damn thing about this month. The one time where the goal is to get as much free candy as we can in just a few hours. Candy is the goal and no one can change it.

13. IT'S FINALLY HALLOWEEN!

Need I say more?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
