Living in the age of Vine, YouTube and Twitter, we're used to seeing covers of popular songs. People constantly post their versions of famous hits. Some are not so good, and some are incredible. These 13 songs are the best I've ever heard, and they just might be better than the original versions.
1. Lo-Fang, "You're the One That I Want"
There is literally no way this is the same song Danny Zuko and Sandra Dee sing to each other at the end-of-the-year carnival. Lo-Fang turned this upbeat song from "Grease" into something a bit more sultry, and I'm in love with him for it. This cover is a prime example of how covers can completely change the meaning of the song.
2. Ed Sheeran, "I'm in Love With the Coco (Hitimpulse Remix)"
Ed does it again with this cover of O.T. Genesis' hip-hop hit. How he sings a rap song like this is beyond me, but Ed is for sure the only person who could do it the way he does. This song is constantly repeating in my car, and it might be my favorite summer song.
3. Sofia Karlberg, "Crazy in Love"
Who knew the lyrics to "Crazy in Love" were so deep? One, this song is the definition of "the feels." Two, it takes some serious lady balls to cover a song by Queen Bey, and Sofia does it brilliantly. The amount of sultry emotion poured into this cover makes it a million times better than Beyonce's fast-paced original version.
4. Lissie, "Pursuit of Happiness"
Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" has never been sung like this before. Lissie remakes this song so beautifully that you almost don't recognize it at first. Her folksy voice brings a completely new feel to this hip-hop classic, and I might honestly like it better.
5. Zayn Malik Ft. Mic Righteous, "No Type"
Zayn sings Rae Sremmurd's hip-hop song with his signature strung-out notes, and it's incredible. Maybe it's just because I've never heard anything like this from the former 1D member, but I'm obsessed.
6. Tori Kelly, "Suit &Tie"
You may recognize her from her Vines, but Tori will keep your attention for way more than six seconds with this cover. From the moment she opens her mouth, you'll be blown away by her. She brings a more lighthearted feel to JT's "Suit & Tie."
7. Jasmine Thompson, "Take Me to Church"
Jasmine Thompson is pretty famous for her cover of "Let Her Go," but she KILLS it with this cover of Hozier's "Take Me to Church." Her soft high notes (see 1:16, 2:00, 3:18) give me chills and make me want to replay this cover over and over.
8. Kina Granis & MAX & KHS, "Earned It"
It's a bold move covering the hit song "Earned It." But The Weeknd has nothing on this cover. The artists recreate the song and make it an even sexier, slowed-down version.
9. Alex & Sierra, "Best Song Ever"
Although Alex & Sierra are more well-known for their cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic," this cover of One Direction's "Best Song Ever" won my heart. (Probably 20 percent because it's 1D and 80 percent because it's so good). They slow down the pop song to make it a more love-y acoustic song. They make it their own, and it honestly might be better than the original. (Sorry, boys, I still love ya.)
10. Birdy, "Skinny Love"
Yes, yes, yes, a million times YES. Birdy remakes Bon Iver's "Skinny Love" with more heart than I've ever heard in a song, let alone a cover. The amount of emotion poured into this song makes it 10 times better than the original, and 2:25 through the end of the video proves my point.
11. Louisa Wendorff, "Blank Space/Style"
This cover is brilliant. Louisa's friend Devon sings "Style" while she belts out the lyrics to "Blank Space," and it's an incredible mashup. As much as I love you, TSwift, I have to say I like this cover even more than the original songs.
12. John Mayer, "Free Fallin'"
With nearly 35 million views on YouTube, this cover is definitely more well-known than some of the others on this list. John Mayer sings the song acoustically with his signature coffee-house blues-y voice, and it just might be better than Tom Petty's version.
13. Timeflies, "Wild Ones"
I saved one of my favorite covers for last. Honestly, every cover Timeflies does is pretty great, but "Wild Ones" is a game changer. This video calls the Flo-Rida cover a "club banger gone baby maker," and I couldn't describe it better myself.
Disagree with my choices all you want, but these covers are 13 of my favorite songs. Even though I love the originals, these songs are constantly being played on my Spotify. (That was your hint to go follow me.)
