25 Underrated Sara Bareilles Songs

The 2016 Grammys have come and gone and don't get me wrong, I was pretty happy with most of the results. But every year, the Grammys leave me wondering one thing.

Why don't we appreciate Sara Bareilles more? I know most of you know "Love Song" and "Brave," and those are great songs, but her talent goes way beyond them. I went to her concert at Madison Square Garden and she put on the best show I've ever seen. Her writing is unreal. She recently wrote a Broadway musical. Her albums are next-level incredible. Taylor Swift gets it and she brought her onstage as a special guest. I'm just tired of people not fully knowing how great she is, so I figured I'd help everyone start to understand a little more. Here's my list of Sara's most underrated songs. Read. Listen. Repeat. (Literally repeat. You'll probably end up wanting to listen to them over and over again. They're really that good.)

1. "Breathe Again"

Car is parked, bags are packed, but what kind of heart doesn’t look back at the comfortable glow from the porch?

Flashbacks of leaving home, ending high school relationships and losing 18-year friendships during freshman year of college anyone? Yeah. Yikes. None of it is easy. Letting go, accepting defeat, realizing it’s your decision, dealing with heartbreak, trying to fight it all.. it feels like you got the wind knocked out of you completely. She puts all of those feelings into words and this song got me through the hardest year of my life so far.

2. "Beautiful Girl"

I know how much you’ve been dying to say “look how much everybody loves me,” but guess who gets left when everyone else fades away?

She wrote this song for her 13 year old self, and at 13 I was taller than every boy in my grade, I had a gap between my two front teeth, I didn’t know what makeup was and all I ever did to my hair was brush it. So yeah, I definitely needed this song then, but honestly? Even at 19 I need it sometimes... OK, all the time.

3. "Love On The Rocks"

Hot as hell, cold as ice, sip it slow cause it’s so nice. Dulls my senses, drives my pain, but I do it again. Burns a bit to the touch, dangerous if it’s too much. If this bottle could talk; love on the rocks.

Comparing an “on again off again” relationship to alcohol... yep... reread the lyrics. I know what you’re thinking, how does it make so much sense? How did she do that? How did she figure that out? Honestly how? She's a genius, that's how.

4. "You Matter To Me"

It’s addictive the minute you let yourself think “the things that I say just might matter to someone." All of this time I’ve been keeping my mind on the running away, and for the first time I think I’d consider the stay.

This is for all the leavers who somehow also manage to be hopeless romantics. I’m a leaver. I love leaving. I hate staying. I don’t know how to stay. But I love love and I want to stay so bad. I know one day someone is going to make me “consider the stay,” and I can’t wait for the day that I can fully relate to this.

5. "Islands"

I still count on one hand the number of good men I know.

Long (but beautiful) song short, good men are rare and real trust is rarer. Preach!

6. "Manhattan"

You can have Manhattan, I know it’s what you want. The bustle and the buildings, the weather in the fall. And I’ll bow out of place to save you some space for somebody new. You can have Manhattan cause I can’t have you.

The summer before my senior year of high school I lost two incredibly important people in my life to Manhattan, so this song holds a very special place in my heart. One of those places that I don’t go near unless I have time to sit down and cry my eyes out.

7. "Everything Changes"

My heart’s at the wheel now and all my mistakes they make sense when I turn them around.

My mind spends a lot of time at the wheel. I overthink and over-plan and over-stress. This year my heart is taking a turn at the wheel and 10/10 recommend. When your mind is controlling your life, all it does is see things exactly the way that they are. Your heart sees things for why they are and how they are. When you look at your mistakes and just see mistakes, it hurts. When you look at your mistakes and see why they happened and how they’ve changed you, it’s freeing. So let your heart take a turn at the wheel for a little while.

8. "Little Black Dress"

I am more than just somebody’s puppet, I can find the cord and then I’ll cut it. I stand a pretty good chance to dust myself off and dance.

You know when you get dumped or you lose your job or you fight with your best friend or the whole world decides to turn on you for a day? Blast. This. Song. And. Dance. It works miracles, trust me.

9. "Bottle It Up"

I don’t claim to know much, except soon as you start to make room for the parts that aren’t you it gets harder to bloom.

When people know how much something means to you yet they ask you to contain your emotions about it, when everyone wants you to water yourself down or change who you are just to fit their standards, Sara knows just what to say.

10. "Red"

How you love is who you are.

The golden rule.

11. "Eden"

No way to make the pain play fair, it doesn’t disappear just because you say it isn’t there.

These one-liners honestly just slay.

12. "King of Anything"

All my life I’ve tried to make everybody happy while I just hurt and hide waiting for someone to tell me it’s my turn to decide.

This isn’t just a song that hit the radio and did well because it’s sassy and it's about a control freak. It’s a song that exposes the struggle that comes along with being a people pleaser. Thanks for being vulnerable enough for the rest of us people pleasers, SB.

13. "Sweet As Whole"

I say what I think cause it’s more economic than drugs or a drink.

Only writers truly understand this, but the rest of this song is for everyone. I don’t recommend playing it around kids or parents. Her choice of words is a tiny bit shocking but a crazy bit empowering.

14. "1000 Times"

In another life, my teeth and tongue would speak aloud what until now I’ve only sung.

Again, this is for the writers out there. Sometimes it feels like we’re hiding behind the words we’ve written. Sometimes we wish we could just say those words directly to whoever they’re about rather than writing them into a song, poem, blog, etc., but it’s just the way we’re wired.

15. "Basket Case"

He’s not a magic man or a perfect fit, but had a steady hand and I got used to it.

We all tell ourselves not to settle, but come on. We’ve all been there. Some of us *cough me cough* more than once. This is one of those realizations that can make you feel a little pathetic, but it’s comforting to know that you’re not alone.

16. "I Didn’t Plan It"

I’m sick of the way I’ve been waiting to break free. I needed saving and a good mistake needed making.

Moral of the song that has quickly become my anthem for 2016: stop judging others. Make a few mistakes. Let others make their own mistakes. Learn from your own mistakes. Let others learn from their own mistakes. Stop trying to plan everything out perfectly, it almost never happens the way we think it will, and it could turn out better than we ever imagined. Just live your life, and let others do the same.

17. "One Sweet Love"

I don’t look, don’t touch, don't do anything, but hope that there is a you. The earth that is the space between, I’d banish it from under me to get to you.

When that overwhelming hope for one sweet love collides with that paralyzing fear that you already had your one sweet love, you get a brilliant song that scares you and gives you hope all at once.

18. "Many The Miles"

I’ve had my fair share of “take care” and goodbyes, I’ve learned how to cry and I’m better for that.

I spent a lot of years trying to conquer my emotions because I saw them as a weakness, but the past couple of years have made conquering them completely impossible for me. Learning to cry is so important, but remembering that you’re better for it is even more important. Crying doesn't mean you're weak.

19. "She Used To Be Mine"

She’s imperfect, but she tries. She is good, but she lies. She is hard on herself. She is broken and won’t ask for help. She is messy, but she's kind. She is gone, but she used to be mine.

No one really knows this song because it’s very new and it’s for the Broadway musical she wrote (is there anything she can’t do?), but it might be my favorite song of hers. Ever. It’s sad. It’s very, very sad. But it’s very, very, very real. It’s like a letter to the girl she used to be, and it’s hauntingly beautiful and tragically relatable.

20. "Hercules"

I was meant to be a warrior, please make me a Hercules.

Basically, she’s human and she overthinks too. But she isn’t looking for some dude to save her. Sara Bareilles doesn’t need a hero. Sara Bareilles is her own hero. Sara Bareilles is my hero (and she should probably be yours too).

21. "Chasing The Sun"

All we can do is try and live like we’re still alive.

She’s literally singing about a cemetery in the middle of the most alive city ever, and she’s doing it in the most incredible way. She twisted death into life and made it beautiful. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by thought of being alive. We are alive and breathing and living and we forget all the time because we’re so busy. Next time you realize you’re just going through the motions, listen to this song.

22. "December"

Distill a whole year down into a day, act like we all start over with a pristine slate. But to get yourself a new life you’ve got to give the other one away.

You know that feeling of hope and change and moving on that you get on New Year’s Eve? You know how it’s ironically accompanied with wishing everyone would stop saying "new year, new me," and actually do something about what they want to change? No one has ever described those conflicting thoughts better than Sara does in the bridge of this song.

23. "Say You’re Sorry"

I want the one word that you refuse to say to me. You’re so good at giving me responsibility. And I wash my hands clean and let you watch me as I go. And I’m sorry for you, just so you know.

Someone who just can’t say the word sorry, I know at least one person just came to mind. The person who keeps putting all the blame on you, and you probably keep apologizing. But hopefully one day you realize they should be saying sorry. Sara handled this one with total class and self-respect. Instead of lashing out and begging for an apology, it seems like she says sorry for him, but the thing is, she’s saying it for both him and her. She’s saying it so that she can finally move on, and she’s saying it because she really is sorry for him. He just lost something really good all because he couldn’t swallow his pride long enough to take a deep breath and say one tiny word.

24. "Lie To Me"

I wish the air would color red when you breathe it in so I could’ve seen it coming. Look in my eyes when you say you love me, so I can see you lie to me.

I think the worst thing you can do to a person is tell them that you love them when you don’t. Just don’t say it! Yes, it’s awkward to hear someone say “I love you” and to not say “I love you too,” but if you don’t love them or you aren’t sure, don’t say it! Next time you’re in that situation, just think of me and know that one time a guy told me he loved me and I replied by saying “my aunt and uncle have a three-legged pit bull." I promise, you can't do worse than that.

25. "Uncharted"

Jumpstart my kaleidoscope heart, love to watch the colors fade. They may not make sense, but they sure as hell made me.

If I could choose any song to be my theme song, it would be this one.

Now you have 25 new songs to listen to and hopefully you'll all be left asking the same question... Will somebody please give this woman a Grammy?

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
