March is Women's History Month and women everywhere are celebrating the great strides ladies have made throughout time. The celebration of "Herstory" is an important one as women are stepping out of the shadows and standing up for their empowerment. So in light of all the strong women out there, here are 13 total bad ass women making "herstory" and proving girls run the world:
1. Malala Yousafzai.
Malala is the youngest person to receive a Nobel Prize at age 17 after being shot by a Taliban gunman at age 15 while on her way to school. After the attack, Malala has continuously been an advocate for women's education around the world.
2. Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The "Notorious R.B.G" is currently the only woman serving as a supreme court justice. Which she takes that very seriously. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a well-known advocate for women in the United States and has been known to put the male Justices in line when it comes the "blind spot" they have for women's issues.
3. Greta Gerwig.
Anyone who has been swept away by the spectacular work she has done directing and writing Lady Bird this year gets why Greta Gerwig is a big deal. What is most powerful is that she is the 5th woman in history to be nominated in the "Best Director" category.
4. Michelle Obama.
Whether you love or hate the Obamas, there is no doubt that Michelle has been making us all proud to be women. She has been a huge advocate of girls being educated and equal to men. As she once said,
"There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish." -M.O
5. Every woman participating in the #Timesup movement.
Hollywood has lead the charge in no longer letting sexual harassments slip by. Every woman to be brave enough to share their story and put themselves on the line is going to be a monumental part of Herstory.
6. Emma Watson.
Emma Watson, one of the best known and popular feminists, has made it her mission to see that women are treated equally to their male counterparts. In 2014, she was appointed as the United Nation's women goodwill ambassador and has given U.N addresses on women's rights multiple times.
7. Jade Hameister.
Perhaps my favorite in the batch, 16-year-old Jade Hameister became the youngest person ever to complete the "Polar Hat Trick" in which she skied for 37 days straight to the North and South Pole, as well as crossing Greenland (the second largest icecap). But, she's not just famous for her impressive endurance. Her girl power came to light when sexist internet comments told her to "make them a sandwich," and make them a sandwich she did. Jade made sure to remind them that they had to make the same trip she did to receive it. Jade defiantly put them in their place and proved girls can do anything they put their minds to.
8. Gloria Steinem.
Gloria Steinem has and always will be one of the biggest symbols for strong women. A 1965 photo of her sitting crossed legged with a sign saying, "We shall overcome," made her one of the founders of modern feminism.
9. Beyonce.
Okay, Bey always makes us proud. She represents the power that a woman can hold. Not only making catchy anthems but often reminding us how strong we can be.
10. Billie Jean King.
(Emma Stone playing Billie Jean King) Billie became an internationally known badass when she was called out by a prominent male tennis player stating there was no way a woman could beat a man in sports. And, that is exactly what she did. Beat him 6-4, 6-3, and 6-3.
11. Bethany Hamilton and Alana Blanchard.
After Bethany was attacked by a shark as a young surfer, she decided to not give up and to become the first one-armed surfer to ever compete. Hamilton proved that women are strong enough to overcome anything. Together Hamilton and Blanchard have redefined women's pro-surfing and are huge supporters of getting more young girls involved sports. These two show another example that women can totally dominate sports.
12. Jane Goodall.
Jane Goodall is a personal hero of mine. As a woman in the science field, Goodall has done much more than prove that maths and sciences are not just for boys, she became the top expert in her field globally. While her activism is most concerned with animal rights and conservation, she has given millions of little girls a goal to look up to.
Let's be honest, these are just a few examples of the millions of women out there making us proud to be who we are every day. Every mother, sister, and daughter has or will prove at least once in their lifetime that girls definitely run the world. And, to every girl or woman reading this...
Know you are making your own "herstory" every day by just by being you. You're strong, and you should be proud to be a woman. I know I am.
