Students working in retail through college know the best (worst?) of both worlds. Sometimes transitioning between the two is more than difficult. Here are a few thoughts that may run through a student's mind while working in retail:
1. "Please stop talking to me like I am a lower life form."
Sometimes I would really love to inform the customers about the degree I am working toward ad ask them if they graduated high school.
2. "I don't always look like a hot mess. I have a professional look too."
Stop asking if I work here. Do you really think I would choose to wear this polo and khaki combination on my own?
3. "I'll be nice to you because you may be a future employer."
But I sure hope not. Working retail may be better.
4. "Coffee is another name for life-juice."
Self-explanatory.
5. "I wonder how much homework I can get done on my lunch break today."
Don't you dare try to follow me; I'm hiding for this hour.
6. "Does my professor honestly think I have time on the weekends to do these assignments?"
Sure, go ahead and assign twice as much homework on the weekends. We obviously have so much free time.
7. "DID MY PROFESSOR REALLY JUST TELL ME TO HAVE A RELAXING WEEKEND?"
8. "I wonder what having a social life is like."
Of course I hang out with my friends on the weekend. We all wear matching uniforms and mock customers together.
9. "I need more coffee."
Again, need I say more?
10. "I can’t wait to have a real job."
But if anyone else implies that you don't currently have a real job, irately exclaim, "THIS IS A REAL JOB!"
11. "Can I graduate yet?"
Just trying to make it through the day.
12. "I'm going to miss this when I'm gone."
In spite of the less than ideal conditions, I will miss the humorous survival mechanisms employed by my coworkers and I.
