Now that it’s nearly Thanksgiving break, many are ready to curl up into a ball on their couch at home surrounded by loved ones and friends they haven’t seen since the summer days. Not their dorm room home but their official home; the place that smells all too familiar and hasn’t changed a bit.
And while this is all going on, they will be reminded of what they’re super thankful for as they stuff their faces with turkey and all the goodness in front of them on the table.
So without further ado, here are the top 12 things us college students are ready for now that we’re so close to the home stretch for Thanksgiving.
1. Family - I am always reminded that family comes first, and in this case, getting to see nearly everyone at once after going months without seeing any of them is one of the best feelings. Especially when we’re gathered in the same house laughing at the same old memories; filling each other in on new ones. There’s nothing better than being surrounded by your day ones.
2. Friends - Chances are they left for college a week before you or after you, so getting the chance to see them when you’re both in different states probably didn’t happen. The first reaction when you see them again will remind you why you’ve been friends from the start. It’s worth the distance when you finally get to come back together and spend some quality time laughing again. FaceTiming isn’t nearly the same.
3. Sleep - Saying you get enough sleep at college is like saying it never snows in Wisconsin. And research shows that you can’t catch up on the sleep you’ve missed out on, but that doesn’t mean you’re not going to try. Getting to sleep in your old home will be amazing.
4. Food - Granted dorm food is edible and can provide us with such joy some nights, especially when it comes to hot cookie night, getting to go home and eat food is a must-want. A home-cooked meal sounds as mouth-watering as it is.
5. Break - Just getting to get away and relax. Knowing there is no homework due tomorrow or in merely minutes as you rush to finish it is amazing.
6. Roommate/s - Even though break calls being away from them, it’s great to know that when things get hard on a random school night, they’re inches away and always there to make it better. And it's good to spend time away, even though you're thankful that they always have your back.
7. Working Wi-Fi - Not saying break will call for spending every single moment on WiFi but it’s good to know that the Wi-Fi at home is reliable. You won’t have to worry about anything breaking down at home because the student Wi-Fi isn’t working...ever...
8. My original comfy bed - The bed you spent endless nights laying in thinking about life...chances are you even decided where you were going to college as you sat there. The dorm room bed is somewhat comfy and all but this is the bed that you can fall asleep in instantly when your head hits the pillow. It’s the final sign that you are officially home.
9. A full kitchen and living room - This is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because you can just sit in the kitchen and eat and it’s a curse because you can sit in the kitchen and eat. But it’s cool to be able to sit on an actual couch and sit at a kitchen table again like a few times before.
10. Being home - Just the thought of being back where you once spent your life 24/7 is awesome. Getting to finally walk back through the door of the place where you grew up. You’ve spent months in a different setting, adjusting to a different angle of living and getting to pretty much go back in time for a few days will be enjoyable. Soak in the feeling, it’s always good to be home.
11. Pets - The furry four-legged friend has gone nuts wondering where you’ve been all this time. The first hug when you get back and they come running from around the corner at full speed has to be incredible. It will be. They’re never going to stop wagging their tail now that you are home.
12. New temporary schedule - Going through the same schedule day after day can seem never ending at times. Catching class and trying to manage everything is hard sometimes. Even though you make the best of it, it's good to be back and change things up. Going home gives you the chance to do just that.
So enjoy the feeling of being home. “There’s no place like home.” It’s amazing how college puts things into a whole other perspective for you.
