12 Summer Plans: Expectations Vs. Realities

If by summer plans you meant lay in my bed and watch Netflix all day, then yes, I have plans.

12 Summer Plans: Expectations Vs. Realities

Summer is here! We have survived another year. Yay, finals are over, and we finally have time to relax. I hope everyone made it out alive. Two months of no papers, exams, or deadlines. Unless, you decided you want to attend summer school. But, summer school over the summer is not nearly as stressing as it is during The Fall and Spring.

We finally have all this time, and we want to make our time worthwhile. However, many of us find the goals we set for ourselves do not always go as planned. 12 summer plans that most likely will end up giving up on after the first week. (Unless you're studying abroad, or on vacation somewhere tropical or extravagant.)

1. Workout.

Expectation: You have a set workout schedule that you're most likely not going to follow through with. You say to yourself: 'I am going to get my body back in shape.' I am going to run 5k's, this year my body will be wondrous.

Reality: Wake up and say to yourself every morning for the next two months, "Tomorrow is the day."

2. Catch up on sleep.

Expectation: Tell myself: "I will get eight hours of sleep every night."

Reality: You plan to sleep early, but then the "wyd" text/calls appear on your phone. Before you know it, you are out partying or staying up late with friends. Or, you want to binge watch Netflix that you put aside so you can do well on finals.

3. Getting a summer job or internship.

Expectation: *Submits job/internship application* *waits all summer to get a callback* *never gets a call back* *cries inside*

Reality: You were hoping not to get the job anyway.

4. Eating healthier.

Expectation: "I finally have time to prep my meals; I will only eat healthy or organic products." "Maybe this summer I will turn vegan."

Reality: I'm just going to eat at all of my favorite fast food places or order take out.

5. Read more books.

Expectation: Purchased a few books and said to yourself "I will finish all these by the end of the summer."

Reality: "After I finish this season on Netflix, I will start a book."

6. Pick up a new skill or hobby.

Expectation: "I am already good at everything."

Reality: You either find a skill you are interested in and completely fail at it, or you become too lazy to even try.

7. Spend more time with family or hometown friends.

Expectation: Tell family and friends: Yay, so excited to see you all. (You really meant it at the time.)

Reality: You presumably made plans with people and not follow through because "something came up."

8. Meet new people.

Expectation: Tell myself: Going to put myself out there, people are not that bad.

Reality: *social anxiety kicks in* or people actually suck.

9. Explore your city.

Expectation: "Finally, I have time to go to that hiking trail, museum or explore new places."

Reality: It's a few days into summer and this is already your mentality: "It's too far." "I'm too lazy." "I have to put real clothes on?"

10. Go to the beach more often.

Expectation: "It is a nice day to go to the beach today."

Reality: But really, "It is a nice day to stay home, again."

11. Go on a road trip.

Expectation:

Me: "We should go on a road trip!"

Friends: "Yes, over the summer."

*summer finally arrives*

Reality:

Me: "I do not have any money or time."

12. Summer Romance

Expectation: I tell myself, "This summer, you are planning to meet the one."

Reality: I am too afraid to put myself out there.

Maybe you will follow through with your plans, maybe not. Just know, you are not alone. Most of us are college students and understand that we work hard over the year, we should get the summer to slack off and be lazy. Enjoy your summer. See you all in the fall.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
