12 Struggles Of Being A Night Owl

Morning people will never understand.

College is the land of the all-nighters. But there are a select few people who live this life almost every night. It's not because we're stressed or laden with work (but we are), it's because we just function better at night. We're more creative, stimulated, and ready to work. We are night owls.

If this describes you, then you'll identify with this list.

1. There is never enough coffee.

Is this my second cup? Third? Fourth? Fifth? I’ll never tell.

2. No one is ever up for late-night studying.

Because your definition of late is way different from all of your friends.

3. You eat way too much Taco Bell.

Because there’s nowhere else to go when those late-night hunger pangs hit (and they always do).

4. Morning classes kill your soul.

You mean I have to function as a human in the morning? I don’t know if I can do that.

5. You can’t remember the last time you had a full night of sleep.

In a world where you’re expected to be up-and-at-’em by 9 a.m., night owls never prosper.

6. Your friends think you’re crazy.

And they’re probably right--lack of sleep and increased caffeine intake does crazy things to the brain.

7. You will eventually crash and burn.

And you’ll sleep way too late. But you’ll wake up ready for another few days of insanity.

8. Days without naps are days wasted.

Without that mid-day refresher, we’re basically useless. I guess it’s time for another cup of coffee to replace the sleep lost.

9. You’re always the one who is called with a mid-night crisis.

Your best friend is having a meltdown because there is no possible way she can finish this project by her 8 a.m.? Expect a phone call.

10. You can (and will) fall asleep anywhere.

A couch in an academic building? A straight-backed chair in the library? A bench on the quad? You better believe that I can catch a few z’s there.

11. Your friends don’t understand why you’re less than chipper before your first intake of caffeine.

Until they see you before 10 a.m., they don’t understand true grumpiness.

12. You feel your eyes rolling out of your head when someone complains that they’re tired after getting “only seven hours” of sleep.

Wow, your life must be hard. I’ll just be over here, trying to take a four minute nap to make up for the five hours of sleep I missed out on last night.

Even though I'm constantly tired and jittery (from the coffee), I wouldn't have it any other way. While the rest of the world sleeps, I create. I explore. I learn about the world around me. And if nothing else, I'm never the first one to fall asleep at a sleepover.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
