After commuting to a bigger city college, I’ve learned to respect the ebbs and flows of small town life. There are many joys and comforts that I might miss if I moved to a bigger city. It’s amazing to see the contrast that two different atmospheres can affect a person. The small town charm has grown on me. Good times and laughs will always be a big part of small town life. I went to Gibsonburg High School and we even have a movie made after our baseball team! This one’s for you, Gibsonburg/Helena!
1. A sense of community.
Most of the time in smaller towns, people get to know each other on a friendly basis. In addition, people can more easily share their interests with these people and create lifelong memories!
2. Local school pride.
Family members and town’s people alike come to support the local school activities and cheer on the sports teams. Local people can support school activities such as plays, band concerts, choir concerts, art fairs, or fundraisers and clubs such as the FFA, student council, or Future Teachers of America. Local businesses will even paint their windows in support of the school and decorate with the school colors.
3. No traffic.
It’s such a nice feeling to drive into town and get where you’re going in a matter of minutes! On occasion you might get behind some slow moving farm machinery or construction crews. You can always smile and wave at them!
4. Agriculture.
Small towns are notorious for being agriculturally developed. It’s a beautiful scene to drive by corn fields and to watch the farmer’s plant their crops in the spring. The farmers hope that their corn is knee-high by the fourth of July.
5. Farmer’s markets.
Speaking of agriculture, the farmer’s markets are a great place to get locally grown produce. These events bring the town together and you can learn a lot about local events coming up.
6. Local parks.
The parks in small towns are attractive and well-kept. They bring us closer to nature and offer a nice place to relax. One of the parks in my town even pays tribute to the public safety service members who have given their lives to our country.
7. Garage sales.
It’s easy to find some gems at the local garage sales! People are giving you a glimpse into their lives by selling their possessions.
8. The scenery.
It’s amazing to have the opportunity to look up at the stars in the night sky when you live farther away from the big city lights. You can also take in the fresh air and admire the architecture throughout town.
9. Locally owned businesses.
You get the chance to meet the store owners and give your input about their selections or services. They will do their best to meet the needs of the community.
10. Sporting events.
Summer leagues and school sports teams bring the small town people out to support. They are entertaining events that bring a new sense of community to our town.
11. Local traditions/parades.
I always love a good parade and the chance to see everyone from town. There’s a special excitement in the air when we can all be together.
12. Opportunities to get involved.
With less people to compete with, it’s easier to volunteer your time. You might be able to help clean up a park, restore a garden, or spend time with people who need your help.
