Fall semester has just begun, and we find ourselves surrounded by new faces and personalities. Meeting new friends is a great experience and extremely rewarding. Luckily, we have the freedom in college to choose the people we spend our time with. The small confines of the high school hallways and cafeterias no longer apply. However, there is one person on campus you can't avoid even if you want to: your roommate. They're the person you see the most and rely on constantly. If your lives don't interact in a positive way, it might just be a rough semester.
1) Doesn't Snore
Let's hope that your new roomie doesn't keep you up at night with their lawnmower breathing.
2) Is Hygienic.
it would be nice to not have to smell them on a daily basis, or to not have to worry about their dirty laundry and Cheeto crumbs encroaching on your space.
3) Shares Food.
There's always that one night where your out of meals and their dorm room pop-tart stash is just too tempting. Hopefully this roomie is kind enough to embrace the "what;s mine is yours" mantra.
4) A Good Listener.
A time will come when drunk you feels overwhelmingly compelled to spill the beans on all the details of your new relationship. Although we all understand in sobriety that these repeated stories get old fast, nothings more disappointing than being ignored.
5) A Human Alarm Clock
This is the roommate that reminds you of your eight am Friday class or the time of the concert or frat party. Whenever you can't remember for yourself, you can always rely on this hyper organized dorm buddy.
6) Encouraging
Whenever your late night soliloquy turns negative, and you begin to question your place at university because of your coming fifteen pager or morning test, this person reminds you of your strengths and pushes you through.
7) Networker
There's always a new and interesting friend to meet hanging around your roommate, and it saves you time because your potential new friends are quite literally delivered to your doorstep.
8) No Judgement
With a no judgement friend living with you, the possibilities are endless. Eat that pizza at three am, go out drinking every day of the week and wear Uggs with shorts, this person will love you all the same.
9) Giving
This person will lend you their fork or pink dress whenever you need it, and its just because they're genuinely kind and care about your happiness.
10) Close to Their Parents
No one wants to have to be the tension-cutter every time their hover-mom comes up for a visit. It's always a nicer time to be around a happy mom and dad of a friend.
11) Laziness Acceptance
This person gets it. They see your sweatshirt and hair bun and raise you flip flops and old tie-dye. They won't think twice about how many naps you take, or how long it takes you to actually complete your assignments.
12) Honesty
You need your roommate to be honest with you. If the person you're dating is a complete jerk or if those shoes don't match that dress, you need to know, and we all hope our roomies will tell us what we truly need to hear.
