My Last Outbreak

Above all things in life, we humans are most responsible for making mistakes. We spill things, we fall, and sometimes we ruin things on accident because of a spill that causes a stain. There are simple remedies for almost every little thing in life including being sick, stains and even just some little hacks to make some dire situations so much easier to fix. Some of these steps are passed down from family, others are passed on from friends, and the rest are just tested and have worked for me when I tried them. The great thing about home remedies is that most or at least some of this stuff is probably just lying around the house ready to help you out in some crazy situations. So break out the vinegar and let's see what we can fix.

1. Coconut oil will remove gum from your hair.

OK, so I can't really get down into the nitty gritty on how this one works, but I know firsthand that it does. I think it's something to do with the combination of the oil in our hair and the coconut oil. I recommend the LouAna brand, but you can use whatever suits you. Don't worry about not using it all; coconut oil can do so many amazing things around the house.

2. A glue stick will take away the itch from a mosquito bite.

It's simple—as soon as you feel the itch from a bite, take the glue stick, and rub some of the glue on it. It take 15 to 20 minutes for it to stop itching, but it's so worth it.

3. Garlic is great for clearing your sinuses.

Yes, this definitely means I recommend pizza and spaghetti for when you're sick. When I feel the sinus pressure, I fill a bowl with hot water and sprinkle garlic powder into it. Then I take a towel and put it over the bowl and my head and breathe in the fumes. I do it a few times a day until everything starts to go away.

4. Honey can help you sleep.

All it takes is two spoonfuls of honey every day before bed for you to start sleeping better and as an added benefit, it can also help you lose some weight.

5. Dawn dish soap kills fleas.

Just to potentially ward off any tiny creatures that might be going after my dog, we bathe her in Dawn dish soap and regular people conditioner in order to keep her soft, smooth and protected from fleas.

6. Dryer sheets will kill the water scent on dogs.

No one likes the wet dog smell and I really hate the smell of them after they are in the hot sun for a little bit. It smells warm and slightly gross. How do you take care of that? Dryer sheets will do. Just rub your dog down with one when they come inside the house, and it will at least mask the scent until they either cool down or dry out.

7. Vinegar works to remove ticks from your hair and body.

This is actually pretty simple. Fill a tub with hot water and pour in some vinegar. Soak in that. Just that; do not add soap. Soak for at least 30 minutes in it, and make sure you soak your hair, too. They will fall out or easily be combed out when you're done.

8. Elmer's glue can remove splinters.

Pour the glue on the area with the splinter, let it dry, and peel the glue off. The splinter should come out when the glue comes off. It may sting a little, but it's effective.

9. Baking soda and vinegar will unclog a drain.

Pour some baking soda on the drain and let some fall in it. Then, like your elementary school volcano project, pour in the vinegar. Then chemical reaction will eat away at the hair and help the water go through more smoothly.

10. Vicks VaporRub will take the pain out of a wasp sting.

Rub it on the affected area to help pull out the pain of a sting from a wasp. It can also help relieve the itch of a mosquito bite. In truth, Vicks is great for everything.

11. Stains.

There's actually a lot of cool things to do to remove stains from clothing and fabric. Vinegar for a grass stain. White wine for a red wine stain. Soda for a grease stain. Peroxide for a blood stain. Baking soda for a coffee stain. Lemon juice for a sweat stain. Shaving cream for makeup stains.

12. Baby wipes can remove the stain of hair dye from your skin.

Just rub the baby wipe on the area of your skin with the dried hair dye on it. Don't try to do it while it is wet, you'll just end up making a bigger mess.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
