12 Best Shows/Movies To Watch On A Rainy Day

Although we have been fortunate enough to not have many rainy days while on campus so far, winter is fast approaching and Netflix season is about to be in full swing. While I do enjoy going out to different events and games on campus, nothing is quite as satisfying as huddling up with my friends in our dorm and binging our favorite shows after a long week of classes. Here are 12 of my favorite television shows and movies to watch:

1. The Harry Potter series

Binge-watching and Harry Potter are practically synonymous with each other. Although Harry Potter has not made it onto Netflix (some movies are just too great), you can go to the campus library and find it. There is nothing quite like seeing Hogwarts for the first time again and personally, there is no other movie that I can quote as expertly as the first film. It’s one cross in life that I do not regret having to bear.

2. FRIENDS

“FRIENDS” is without a doubt the best show to watch with a group on a rainy day. There have been weekends when I have walked into my dorm’s first floor lounge and have seen people huddled in blankets on the sofa marathon-ing the episodes and they are more than happy to add people to the marathon experience. There is only one rule: make sure that you clap during the beginning of the theme song.

3. Walk of Shame

I recently re-watched this movie with my friends on the Friday night that the President’s Ball was canceled because of the impending hurricane. It is hands down one my favorite movies and the situations that Elizabeth Banks’s character finds herself in only get better as the movie progresses. Unfortunately, it isn’t on Netflix, but if you know someone with an HBO GO account, I give you permission to pester them into letting you use it for the night. You’ll be quoting the movie for the next week.

4. M*A*S*H

I haven’t watched “M*A*S*H” at school since I finished the series over the summer, but the overly comedic nature of the early seasons are always a solid choice of what to watch on a dreary day. One of these days when I have nothing to do and I decide to get out of my own way, I’m going to also trek to the library to get the movie version, which if it bears any resemblance to the show, should be enjoyable to watch.

5. Everybody Loves Raymond

When I came to school this year, I introduced one of my best friends (who is also my roommate) to the sitcom, “Everybody Loves Raymond.” She instantly fell in love with the show and now it is our go-to comedy whenever we have downtime. If you need something to cheer you up on a lousy day, log onto Netflix and watch the pilot episode. You’ll be rolling on your bed laughing at the ridiculous things that Raymond’s parents, Frank and Marie, say to him.

6. Pretty Little Liars

Many people wrote off “Pretty Little Liars” several seasons ago after the girls’ supposed mystery stalker “A” was yet again just a decoy and not the real person behind all of their misfortune. However, I came late to the show and enjoyed it consistently. Watching this show on a rainy day, albeit creepy, is entertaining, but I recommend doing it with a friend.

7. How I Met Your Mother

You can never go wrong with “How I Met Your Mother.” Much like “FRIENDS,” HIMYM is able to boost your mood from 0 to 100 as soon as you get five minutes into the episode. The stories that the older Ted tells his kids are so ridiculous and I tend to laugh the hardest when he recounts his and Marshall’s college tales.

8. Frasier

Sleepless in Fairfield? No worries; turn on “Frasier” and laugh at the antics he and his family get up to in their hometown of Seattle. If you’re stuck inside on a rainy day and you’re looking for something witty to watch where the punch lines are not predictable, “Frasier” is undoubtedly the show to watch.

9. Sherlock

‘Tis the season to binge-watch “Sherlock” because come Christmas 2015, the latest episode that precedes the fourth season will be here! Watching these episodes is essentially like watching a movie in terms of duration, but is definitely worth it and is also something that I did a couple times last year in my freshman dorm. Just make sure you truly have no work to catch up on during your rainy day because once you finish the first episode, you’ll be ready to start the next one!

10. Doctor Who

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve fallen away from “Doctor Who” in recent seasons. However, the revival seasons one through four are perfect to watch when you have nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon. Also, let’s be honest, David Tennant is a sight for sore eyes.

11. Supernatural

“Supernatural” is another show that you need to watch with a group of people, especially if you’re watching episodes from the early seasons. Last year, my friends and I huddled in my roommate's old dorm room on a dull Sunday and spent the afternoon and evening watching old episodes and eating take-out. You may be able to think of more productive ways to spend your day, but you won’t find any that are more fun.

12. Orange Is the New Black

If you’re anything like me, you watched the entire third season of “Orange Is the New Black” the weekend that it was released on Netflix and now you’re stuck until the next season is confirmed. Unlike most of the other shows on the list, “OITNB” is hardly “feel good,” but it is certainly entertaining and worthwhile to re-watch with close friends who also enjoy the close bonds and friendships that are portrayed by the different women.

There are many ways that you can spend a rainy day on campus. You can do homework (like you should), brave the weather (like you know you won’t), or you can kick back and watch some great shows and movies (preferably not all at once, but hey, you do you).

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
