Us Californians live where most people vacation, so it's easy to tell who are the native Californians and who's not. Here are some ways you know that you live in the best state in the United States.
1. You NEVER refer to yourself as someone from "Cali".
If you are talking to anyone from outside of California, someone is bound to mention how cool it is that you're from "Cali". But we aren't from "Cali", we are from California.
2. You know the In-n-Out Secret Menu by heart.
A burger with a side of animal fries and a milkshake...but if you're feeling healthy, a protein style burger, with lettuce instead of the bun.
3. Most people from outside of California assume we all live right by the beach.
Lucky for us, the diversity throughout the state is great. California has beaches, valleys, deserts and mountain ranges, so we don't all live at the beach.
4. We don't handle the cold very well.
Pretty much, anything below 65 is cold to us. If it's 50 degrees at night, we'll be cuddled up inside with a blanket.
5. Everyone assumes you know how to surf.
We don't all live by the beach and not all of us surf 24/7. There's a lot more to do than just surf; we know how to skateboard, ski, snowboard, etc.
6. We can't stop commenting on how cheap gas is outside of California.
How can gas be $3-4 in California, but $1-2 as soon as you cross the state border?!
7. Highways become "the 56" or "the 101".
Freeways aren't 'I-35", we always replace it with the definite article instead.
8. It's a big deal when it finally rains.
Given the ginormous drought we're in, we celebrate even if it's just a light rain shower. But, we also forget how to drive as soon as a raindrop hits the windshield.
9. Our biggest natural disaster concern is an earthquake.
Rather than tornado drills or hurricane drills, we have duck and cover drills. And we've all woken up one time or another to the feeling of your bed being rattled.
10. "Like" is a part of your daily vocabulary.
"And then, like, we found some really, like, cute clothes from the mall." As Californians, we don't even realize we do it, but other people do.
11. You live in the best state there is and you wonder why anyone would want to live anywhere else.
Californians are the most fortunate people, because we live in the most beautiful place there is. The diversity is something to be celebrated and the topography is breathtaking. There is nothing better, than saying that you're from California.
