As a youngster of the 21st century, chances are you spent a large portion of your childhood fixated on a television screen. Despite hours spent watching programs that became highly anticipated events, however, many of these beloved characters and fantasy worlds have most likely slipped from your memory, leaving only faint traces of once-treasured imaginative lands. As a tribute to the televised people and places that impacted your youth, here are 11 TV shows from your childhood that you've probably forgotten:
1. My Life as a Teenage Robot
Featuring a provocatively-dressed automaton by the name of XJ-9, or more commonly known as Jenny Wakeman, this television series balanced the everyday struggles of teenagerhood with the pressures of saving the world. The show was canceled due to low ratings, yet it continues to resonate in the hearts of 90’s kids who were inspired to one day become world-defenders themselves.
2. Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat
For some odd reason, this show seems to faintly linger in the conscious with no ability to be distinctly recalled. It aired for one year, and depicted the adventures of an adorable cat named Sagwa during the Qing Dynasty.
3. Invader Zim
If you didn't watch this show during your elementary school years, chances are you picked it up around the awkwardly-applied-eyeliner phase of your pre-teens. “Invader Zim” followed the story of frustrated extraterrestrial Zim, whose mission of world domination often eroded his ability to fit in on planet earth, no doubt paralleling the awkward tension of your skinny jeans and band tees days.
4. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
Another show with a slightly unsettling premise, “The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy” aired from 2003 to 2007. Although it didn't earn a cult following like obscurely popular “Invader Zim”, this series, featuring the adventures of a pessimistic young girl, her dopey best friend, and the one and only Grim Reaper, was rather popular for its time, leading to the creation of 6 seasons, 3 movies, and several video games.
5. Totally Spies
Armed with imaginary gadgets and imperative missions, your childhood spy adventures were undoubtedly inspired by this show. Featuring three teenage girls with an endeavor to protect humanity, “Totally Spies” was an empowering testament to the kick-ass ability of young girls across the globe.
6. Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends
Regardless of your age, it's impossible not to look fondly back on the awesome tales of amicable young Mac and his egotistical yet lovable imaginary friend Bloo. This show had us all wishing that our imaginary friends could be tangible adventure-seekers, just like our young selves.
7. Fairly Odd Parents
If you have a vague recollection of a teacher with a propensity to award F’s and a tooth-crazed pop-star, then you’ll probably recall the lyrics to this catchy theme song instantaneously. Ten year old Timmy Turner and his eccentric fairy god parents have graced the lives of children everywhere since 2008. The show is currently in its tenth season, although featuring some changes original fans have protested. Perhaps Dinkleberg has struck once again.
8. Teen Titans
You knew you were in for an intense thirty minutes when you heard the opening notes of this theme song. Regardless of whether your favorite member was the alien princess, the robot-human hybrid, the mysterious psychic, the fearless leader, or the shapeshifter, you followed these loveable teens through thick and thin.
9. The Powerpuff Girls
Sugar, spice, everything nice, and chemical X became not only the ingredients to a captivating crime fighting trio, but also one of the best TV shows of all time. With their impeccable super powers and good-hearted nature, these three young girls are faced with the task of keeping the city of Townsville safe from destruction (i’m starting to see a trend here). Whether the villain was a spoiled girl, a power-hungry ape, or a friendship conflict, we always knew that the Powerpuff Girls always had our backs.
10. Mr. Meaty
Lingering in our minds like a haunting nightmare, this show featured the adventures of two teenagers working in a fast-food restaurant, often encountering bizarre and grotesque situations. This show aired from 2005 to 2009, for a total of 2 seasons and 20 unsettling episodes.
11. Codename: Kids Next Door
As a show that taught us to rebel against authority, it's no surprise that we enjoyed “Codename: Kids Next Door” as much as we did. Featuring an eclectic group of youngsters on a mission to fight those who commit horrid acts such as assigning homework and promoting flossing, this series was loved by children, but no so much by parents.
