GroupMe has made group messaging all the more easier between iPhone and Android users alike; saving relationships between technologically-conflicting friends, helping groups function much more efficiently (sure, kind of, not really) and coordinating plans between people in the simplest of ways (said no one ever).
Since coming to college, I’ve acquired numerous GroupMe groups, some more entertaining and active than others. Nonetheless, there are a few common trends found in the best of them. Here are 11 for you.
1. Memes.
Your group name has also probably been some variation of “Meme Team” at one point or another.
2. The vicious cycle of removing and re-adding members.
Everyone has the power over one another’s fates. No one is safe.
3. YELLING!
LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS. MUCH EXCITEMENT.
4. Anywhere between five and 500 messages being sent in a matter of minutes.
Look away for five minutes and find yourself lost in a highly intensive conversation and realize that it’s far too late to contribute.
5. Talks of plans that never actually solidify.
When everyone plans to go to dinner at 6 p.m., that soon turns into 6:30 p.m., 7:45 p.m., 8 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and then never mind, no one is hungry so you either starve or go alone.
6. Awkward moments in which no one responds.
*Instantaneous thoughts of “Wait, was it something I said?” followed by moderate fits of anxiety until someone changes the subject*
7. Experiencing ten seconds of pride when someone likes your message.
That lil blushing heart makes you blush a lil inside too. Admit it.
8. Roasting.
No one is excused from heckling, jabbering or tormenting, but just know that that means you're loved by your friends — maybe. Well, let’s just say if you're not made fun of now and then you should be concerned.
9. Changing your profile to anything but your God given name.
What’s even better is when everyone switches names with other people in the group so no one knows who the hell anyone is.
10. Seeing someone type a message that is never sent.
Oh, what could have been. How agonizing.
11. Innocent arguments turn hostile.
Maybe tacking 'lol' onto the end of this will lighten the tension.
Despite the frustrations and occasional awkwardness, you'll never want to tune out of the GroupMe.
