11 Things That Happen When Your Grandma Is Your Best Friend

Grandmas are great best friends.

11 Things That Happen When Your Grandma Is Your Best Friend
Amy Kempf

They say that age is just a number. I know this to be true because one of my best friends is almost 50 years older. Despite being 22 and 71, we still giggle like school children together and have a blast whenever we get to hangout. Grandmas aren't just wiser women, but also cool, fun, and great gal pals. From shopping together to watching sports, I love to hang out with mine every chance I get. Grandmas are special people, ones you can count on and ones who spoil you just enough. Having a friendship with your grandma is creating an ever stronger bond and relationship. I cherish all the memories we make together and feel so lucky to call her one of my best friends. If you are lucky enough to have a relationship with your grandma like I do, it probably looks like this.

1. You gossip with the best of them.

Your grandma knows almost all of your secrets. From boys to school stories, she hears everything. Of course, you also gossip about celebrities. My grandma always has an opinion about the latest episode of "The Bachelor" or the new Bruno Mars song. You keep up to date on the gossip, and you don't miss a beat!

2. You aren't afraid to be silly.

My grandma and I are constantly laughing. We let our guard down and just have fun with whatever we are doing. Even in public!

3. You have sleepovers.

As a kid, I would always go over to grandma's for the weekend while my parents left town. Now as a 22 year old, I still like to have visits just for fun. You stay up and watch a movie or just talk, and she always make sure your sleeping arrangements are comfortable! Then in the morning, you chat over a nice breakfast and a great cup of coffee. Grandma's house is always the best.

4. You give each other fashion advice.

She likes to tell you what you should wear and what would look cute. Sometimes she is even right! Shopping with her is always fun, and she isn't afraid to be honest about what looks good and what doesn't. You return the favor by helping her expand her wardrobe. "Grandma, try a scarf!" "Yoga pants are all the rage right now, you could totally pull them off."

5. She gives you great life advice.

Your grandma cares about you and loves to sit down and have a heart to heart. As grandmas are usually pretty wise, her advice is something you should actually listen to. She's been through situations similar to yours, so she always knows what to say. She's not afraid to tell you how it is because she just wants what is best for you.

6. You spoil each other.

Grandmas are notorious for spoiling grandchildren, and this doesn't change with age. While you love it when grandma treats you to lunch or a new shirt, you also love to buy her little gifts as well. Seeing her face light up is a great feeling, and besides, you know how much she loves treats and sweets.

7. Your friends love her.

Your friends know how awesome you grandma is. At first, they might have thought it was different that you and your grandma were so close, but now they love her almost as much as you do. They love hearing stories of your shenanigans!

8. Social media loves her.

Despite her hesitation, you love to post pictures of your grandma on Facebook and Instagram. The world needs to know how cute your grandma is! Sure enough, these pictures get a ton of likes because your grandma is just that cute. The social media world loves her, as does everyone.

9. She calls and emails you daily.

Being away at college is hard. You miss out on visits to grandma's house and lunch dates. To make up for that time, you and your grandma email each other (if she's hip and tech savvy). You also have frequent phone calls where you ramble on and on, catching up on everything in each others lives! I love getting emails from my grandma about funny pins on Pinterest and calls updating me about her church group or how her dogs are doing. My grandma never fails to make me smile, even from miles away.

10. You hear great stories about your parents growing up.

You love to hear stories about how your mom was as a teenager. There is always a new story to be told and laughs to be had. It's great to have so many stories, especially when they are at your parents expense! And of course, some stories truly never get old.

11. You can have fun doing almost anything.

From shopping to getting lunch, hanging out with grandma is fun no matter what. You make the best of everything and just enjoy each other's company.

I'm so lucky to be able to call my grandma one of my best friends. I always look forward to spending time with her. She is full of laughs and good times. While she may be older and wiser, that doesn't stop us from having an awesome relationship. Being able to call your grandma one of your best friends is a gift. I feel blessed to be so close to mine! We truly are two peas in a pod. Remember to give your grandma a big hug and let her know how much she means to you. Here is to all the awesome grandmas out there! We appreciate you and are glad to call you friends.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
