As summer is coming to an end, I can't help think about how I'm going to miss being able to sleep in each day and go into work at the Cayuga Red and White in the afternoons. This whole summer, I've been saying I'm excited to go back to school and get out of Cayuga again, but now I'm finding myself wanting to stay a little longer. This little town drives me crazy sometimes, but there are things I will miss experiencing every day. I have put together my version of a list of what Cayuga residents experience on a daily basis.
1. You always get stopped by trains.
Getting caught behind a train and being late to work or school is a legitimate excuse. Everyone hates getting stuck waiting on a train, but it stinks even more when you are in a hurry to get somewhere. You might as well put you car in park, choose a good radio station and hope the heat or AC works in your vehicle.
2. You get stuck behind tractors all of the time.
The only thing worse than waiting on a train is waiting on a tractor. Since tractors take up so much of the road, it can be very risky when trying to pass them. Being stuck behind a tractor is also a good reason for being late somewhere. It's a little easier to get around a tractor on the highway or another main road, but if you're on a back road, you might as well enjoy the long country drive.
3. Who needs a Planet Fitness or YMCA when you have the Cayuga park track?
The track at the park is actually wonderful. The Cayuga park is nice and big, providing a great scenic route for your walk. Many people walk in the morning's before work, or in the evenings after their work shifts.
4. Going to Danville or Terre Haute Steak n' Shake or Buffalo Wild Wings is a 'crazy night out'.
Seriously. There is close to nothing to do in Cayuga. The closest places to go for entertainment are Danville and Terre Haute. To be honest, they don't offer much either. A late night trip to Bdubs is about as exciting as it gets.
5. PokemonGo is pretty much useless here.
PokemonGo seems to be the latest craze. Unfortunately for Pokemon lovers, Cayuga isn't the best place to "catch them all". You can find some Pokemon, but nothing too special, I believe. Maybe college campuses will offer more as students get ready to head back in a couple of weeks.
6. Palucci's will always be the after football games go-to place.
Just about everyone goes to Palucci's after every home football game. Are you even a true Falcon if you skip out on this Friday night activity?
7. You're missing out if you've never had a Falcon Dew or sweet tea from Angie's Country Kitchen.
I love Angie's Country Kitchen. The sweet tea is AMAZING. Who needs to go home and do homework after school, when you can get a large plate of cheese fries and hang out at Angie's for awhile? The gas station and Burger King's drinks just can't compare.
8. When someone says they're going to the grocery store, they don't have to specify.
There's only one grocery store in town, the Cayuga Red and White. If someone says they're going to the store, it has to be the Red and White or Dollar General. There aren't many options when it comes to your shopping needs.
9. Everyone knows everyone.
It's true. Everyone attends the same elementary school, middle school and high school. If there was a rumor started, everyone would know by lunch time. Many people learn the hard way that secrets are hard to keep in a small town.
10. Older teachers had your parents as students, too.
Teachers who have been teaching for years probably had your parents as students. They will provide you with endless stories of how your parents or uncles acted in school. This can be both entertaining and terrifying.
11. Cayuga is still the best.
Don't get me wrong, I love living in Cayuga. It's small, peaceful and quiet most of the time. Everything may sound a little bad bad, but I think it's what gives this little town its character.
