Being a mixed race is probably one of the most fun things that have ever happened to me. Family gatherings are always the highlight of my breaks, weekend, and pretty much entire life; I get to see all my cousins, who are practically my best friends. Not only are you a mixed race, but majority, if not all, of your family is also. Whoever said blonds have more fun never met a person that is a mixed race.
1. Filling out applications that ask you your race are always a struggle
You usually get stuck with having to select other, and then pray people do not think you are from a different planet because the application did a great job all by itself. This would most likely fall into the category of, “one of the most uncomfortable things you have ever done.”
2. So, “what are you?”
A human? The first time you were asked this questions you actually thought people were wondering what you were because you looked like you were from another planet; but now the question does not even cross your mind as being odd because you have heard it at least a thousand times, if not more.
3. When you go to family gatherings and everyone is speaking a different language
Your mom’s side of the family speaks one language, your dad’s side speaks another, and then you have some aunts and uncles thrown in there that speak another language as well. At this point you just sit there and smile, and hope no one tries to carry a conversation with you in one of the 10 languages that you are not fluent in.
4. Questioning if you should join a culture club, and if you do which one(s) should you join
Since you embrace so many different cultures it comes to the point where you do not necessarily know which one you are a part of it. You want to join all of them, but that is physically impossible, so you just take the high road and don’t join any.
5. When people start to ask you a bunch of questions about your race and religion, and you don’t know how to respond
You love sharing your culture with other people, but conversations can vary from being really good to really bad.
6. You’ve tried so many different foods, and you begin to realize that you probably love food more than you love people
You are excited to go to family gatherings to see your family, but the food; oh the food is battling with your family for the top spot of reasons you want to go. You will not eat anything the whole day for the sole reason that you can scarf down every single thing that is at your gathering because, the food just tastes so good.
7. Your idea of tanning is laying in the shade with a hat, glasses, and towel over your whole body
Your natural skin tone to begin with is tanner than other peoples. When it comes to the point of actually wanting to tan, you turn to a piece of charcoal and it isn’t the prettiest color out there.
8. When both your parents speak different languages, and say things about each other when they are mad
We have all experienced this, and it is one of the best things about being a mixed race. Your mom and dad will get into a fight, and then your mom will start saying things about your dad, usually profanity, in her native language and he will have absolutely no idea what she is saying. He turns to you, hoping you will help him out and tell him what she means, but you just look at him blankly, as if you have no idea, but you secretly know everything she is saying about him and just laugh silently to yourself.
9. You know you're in some deep shit when your parents look at you straight on and start speaking in their native language
This is one of the scariest things that have ever happened to you as a child. The sad part is, it still freaks you out to the point where you want to run and hide in your room but you know that will just make things ten times worse.
10. You love to learn about your parents past and culture
Your parents have experienced some crazy things in their lifetime, and you could hear their stories over and over again and still be extremely interested. Don’t deny it, you’re parents are pretty cool!
11. You’re basically the most badass race out there because; no one in the world is like you!
You’re pretty unique and you love it. You take pride in your race and culture, and are not afraid to show it!
There are so many perks with being a mixed race. You are exposed to so many different people; religions, cultures, and customs that you begin to not even associate yourself with one or two of them, rather all of them. I won’t lie; there really are not nay bad things that come with being a mixed race.
