11 Things I Miss About Marching Band

Wherever you are in life, reminiscing on past memories will always bring a smile to your face and is sure to create a few laughs as well. For me, my high school marching experience will always be one that I look back on with a smile, and in hysterical laughing fits with my friends. As much as we claimed to hate it back in high school it will always be something I miss and look back on. I am so thankful I got to go to a high school that encouraged me to be involved in many things, and made it possible for me to be in the marching band and be an athlete beside 150 of my closest friends. I'll never forget my band days, and I will forever miss the band room.

1. The band room.

(Cutting class and hiding behind the drum sets -- sorry, Mr. Britton.)

This was always the best safe space to avoid responsibilities and hide from your classes in. I could always count on a few friends to be there, along with a hidden snack storage bin.

2. Making fun of the director.

I will give my director one thing, he worked really hard and he knew how to make a joke. This was a fantastic combination and my friends and I still love to come back and goof around in the band room and make fun of him for old times sake. Or just really messing with him and his precious chairs.

3. Band camp.

Say what you want about the hard hours and many hours in the sun, but some of my best memories come from that grueling week in August that we lived in the band room, and got to dress ridiculously every day.

4. Tradition.

Theme days were the best days.

The traditions were some of the best part of band. There was something so unifying about knowing you were doing the same thing others had done before you and you were apart of something so special.

5. Friends.

Some of my best friends were in the band and beside me for every early morning rehearsal and grueling parade, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

6. Bus rides.

Back of bus for life.

7. Goofing off in the stands.

Without fail we would always get in trouble for not paying attention and having too much fun during the games -- and I have no regrets.

8. Getting yelled at over the loud speaker.

I pride myself on the amount of times I got in trouble during band -- all in good fun, of course. Definitely got in trouble because just after this I dropped her on her face -- oops.

9. Stand music.

I can still listen to songs and say "Hey I can play this on my flute." Loved rocking out to some of the best beats in Pennsylvania.

10. Section pride.

My all time favorite tradition, where all of the sections competed for bragging rights- may the best skit win. By the way the flutes were totally robbed the year of Harry Potter. It was rigged. I'll never forgive the clarinets.

11. Friday night lights.

I'll never forget my favorite memories in the stands with my best friends.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
