11 Things I've Learned From My First Semester At College

It's been one big trial and error

11 Things I've Learned From My First Semester At College

Entering college for the first time, I was given advice from my experienced friends. I really didn't take any of it too serious as I never experienced the circumstances that they warned me about. But, concluding my first semester in college, I've now learned a ton, academically and socially. I've also had plenty of time to reflect on myself.

1. Not Everyone Has Good Intentions, So Don't Openly Trust

Everyone entering their first year of college is completely open to meeting new people. However, not all of them stay for the best reasons, so stay on guard until you know who they are.

2. Put Yourself Out There

Be open to joining clubs, picking up new interests, and exploring your school's events. These are the places where you can meet new people and create bonds with other students outside of your major and dorm building.

3. Work Smart, Not Hard

One of my professors gave me this advice. Completing all of your homework can be difficult, especially if assignments and projects pile up. For the most part, your professors just want to know that you understand the information that they have taught you. If you allocate a set amount of time for each assignment, you will be able to properly manage your schedule which makes your workload seem more achievable. Also, remember to use an agenda so that you do not forget to complete any of your work.

4. Call Your Parents

You don't have to talk to them every single day, but staying in contact with them will ensure that college was the best choice... And ensure them that you are still alive.

5. Don't Lose Track Of Who You Are

College is a huge adjustment for freshmen, so keep in mind who you are and your values. Getting caught up in new social environments might cause you to loose track of yourself, but it is never too late to find new people who you are yourself with.

6. It's Okay To Ask for Help

Talking to your professors or TA's is okay. They are there to answer questions and clarify assignments. It might be intimidating, but their job is to make sure you succeed. Also, by connecting with professors, you have a networking opportunity for professionals in your field.

7. Have Fun, But Not Too Much Fun

Yes, you're in a great social environment, but remember why you're in college.

8. Be Able To Separate Weekdays And Weekends

This goes with number 7, you're at college to get an educational degree, not a degree in drinking.

9. Don't Be Afraid To Say No

You do not need to go out every night of the weekend, or even every weekend. Nobody looks at you differently if you decide to stay in one night. Especially if you are drowning in homework, sometimes the best thing to do is to just stay in and work.

10. It's Completely Okay To Miss Home

Most likely, your roommates/friends are feeling the same way. Look at old pictures, call your family, or text your friends from home if you're feeling down. Sometimes a complete distraction might help too. Go to the mall or watch a movie to get rid of the homesickness.

11. It's Okay To Be Alone

Locking yourself in your room all day and ordering pizza delivery is okay. You don't always have to be surrounded by people. Sometimes, the only answer is to lay in bed all day and binge watch Netflix.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
