9 months and 13 lbs later, my first year of college is over. The year was filled with ups and downs, but overall it was a great year. In my time here, I’ve learned a few things to be successful.

1. You will never be able to do homework at night, so don’t try it

Why on earth would you do you homework at night? That's when all the social gatherings are happening. Wake up before your classes and do your homework; the time pressure really prevents further procrastination.

2. Keeping your room clean? Forget about it

Don't waste your time cleaning your room when you'll be sleeping or studying or hanging out with friends.

3. Always drink light beer

Freshman 15 is real people. If you want to stop it as much as possible, make sure to drink the cheap light beer. You'll thank me later.

4. Save your money for only the most necessary things

Do not tempt yourself with going to the mall; you really don't need that $60 sundress as much as you think you do. You'll appreciate the money to eat out when you're sick of the cafe. When you run out of money, without a job, learning to live and being completely broke is not fun at all.

5. Try to eat the healthier options at the cafe

As stated before, freshman 15 is real.

6. Invest in dry shampoo

You will not get up and shower before class. Let's be honest: you want as much sleep as you can get, so when you want to look halfway decent, dry shampoo can work wonders. Just don't get close enough for anyone to smell you.

7. Nap

You most likely won't be going to sleep at night until at least 2-3am. The only way to keep going through the day string is to power nap it out.

8. Invest in a lot of fans

Unless you go to some high class school where the dorms have their own thermostats, fans are crucial if you don't want to soak your sheets in sweat.

9. Wearing the same makeup from last night is perfectly fine

If you have some bomb ass setting spray that keeps your makeup looking fresh the next day, who cares? Wear it. You'll still look hot, and no one will ever know.

10. Collect any change you can

Who knows what shenanigans you get into at school. Whatever you do, you always end up with a mound of dirty clothes. Save as much change as possible so you can keep your clothes clean.

11. Make friends that wear the same size as you.

You can avoid spending money on clothes and just borrow someone else's!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
