Ah, cats. Dog people adamantly hate them, and cat people are perceived as crazy people who do nothing but sit at home with their 20 cats. I can't say that's not my goal in life, but for the time being, I love my one cat at home. I miss him dearly every day, and what I get most excited for each break is to see him, even though he'll probably just be really mad at me for leaving him for so long and won't associate with me until my last day home. If you're a cat owner, you'll start to see habits forming in your non-cat related life (if that even exists). Here are some telltale signs you know a cat person.
1. They're used to giving a lot and receiving a little.
You care for your furry friends the best you can. You feed them every day, make sure they have fresh water, clean out that dreaded litter box, buy them toys and let them do whatever the heck they want. I even have to brush my cat's teeth because he easily gets gingivitis. In return, you'll get a solid two minutes of cuddling and the possibility of a short petting session. Oh, all on their own time, of course. If they want your attention at 2 a.m., you know that they will make sure they get your attention at 2 a.m.
2. You'll never find little trinkets in their home decor.
Apparently, once you bring a cat home, you sign an unwritten contract that everything that can be possibly pushed off a shelf or table will be.
3. You may find them eating their food in very roundabout ways.
That's because you can't have a single meal without your curious cat wanting a sniff, if not a bite. They will follow your fork right up until the food goes into your mouth. If you enjoy a drink with your meal, you may distract your cat from your food as they inspect the cup and try to figure out the best way to fit their head in and hydrate.
4. Their camera roll is usually full, and not with typical pictures.
Cat owners love showing off their cat. Mine has his own hashtag on Instagram. If they want to show you a normal picture on their phones, you're going to have to give them some time to scroll through all the pictures of their cats. Cats typically don't like to cooperate too, so many of those pictures are simply attempts of actually having the cat look at the camera. When they finally get that perfect picture, they have to share it with as many people as they can.
5. They're constantly in awe of how dogs behave.
It's a little overwhelming for them to think that their pet could constantly show affection. Dogs are loyal, and will love you no matter what. If you even look at your cat the wrong way, they'll dismiss you for the rest of the day. Dogs will gladly jump on your lap and lick you, regardless of their size. Some cats are this affectionate, but that's if you lucked out. I've raised my cat since he was two weeks old and abandoned by his mother, and he still won't show me love.
6. They're either extremely defensive or extremely accepting.
Look, we don't exactly know why we're cat people either. It's a lifestyle that chose us, and there's no turning back. There are two ways we take this. We either try to counter every single argument you try to make against cats, or we agree wholeheartedly with you. Sometimes, it's both.
7. They're never bored at home.
Cats have super strange habits. Any foreign object you bring into your house has the potential to bring hours of entertainment, depending on how your cat reacts to it. They'll try to either fit in it, eat it, fight it or defend themselves from it, and it's always disappointing if they just look at it and walk away.
8. They react well to sudden movements.
Every cat owner knows that crazy mood cats get into where they run all over the house for no apparent reason. They must be cautious during these moods, because your cat could be hiding anywhere, waiting to playfully strike at your ankles. They don't mean any harm by it, but if you're barefoot, it could cause some physical damage. Cat owners start taking on the reflexes of their feline companions.
9. You notice that they're single more often than not.
Owning a cat greatly reduces the pool for a potential other. It's not because your slight obsession with your cat is a turn-off. Nope, not at all. However, we can't date anyone that's allergic to cats, doesn't like cats or isn't willing to accept the fact that we love our cats more than anything on this planet. If they own other pets, they need to know the relationship depends on how well that pet gets along with our cat.
10. They're easy to cheer up.
If you see that your cat person is sad, just show them cats, in any form. Whether it be funny GIFs or videos or just pictures of cats, you can guarantee that they'll perk up, even if it's only a little bit. Don't be alarmed if they start crying, though. It's just because they can't handle how cute every single cat that ever existed is.
11. They are the best people you will ever meet.
We try to compensate for our apathetic pets by showing lots of love and affection to everyone we meet. We are easygoing and flexible, since we've learned to work around our cat's schedule and habits. We responsible, and know how to handle stubbornness. We can improvise when something goes wrong, as our cats often put us in sticky situations. We typically reflect the calm lifestyle of our pets.
I definitely am a crazy cat lady in the making, but I know that getting my cat was one of the best things to ever happen to me.
