11 Things Art Majors Are Tired Of Hearing
the day herald

As a potential studio art major, I get a lot of similar responses when I tell people what I plan on studying throughout college. Here are 11 things most art majors are tired of hearing as told by the cast of "New Girl."

1. "What are you going to do with that?"

There are so many possible careers to have with an art major, and I still haven't figured out which I want to pursue.

2. "Oh, so you're in college to learn how to color?"

Actually, there's a lot more to art than just coloring. We have to learn many different mediums, like glass, wood, paint, charcoal and so much more. We also have to take art history classes to learn how to analyze different artists and the meaning of their pieces.

3. "Do you want to be a teacher?"

Art education is an option for art majors, but there are also other jobs in the arts field.

4. "Can't you make art without a degree?"

Sure you can teach yourself how to paint and draw, but getting a degree teaches students the behind the scenes work, like prepping a gallery or how to use a jigsaw properly.

5. "That's a super easy major, isn't it?"

Painting, drawing and sculpting may sound easy, but the high credit hours and extensive amount of extra studio work makes getting an art major pretty difficult.

6. "Oh cool, I was really good at drawing in middle school."

Sometimes it can be annoying to hear about that awesome still life someone painted in fifth grade. Just like any major, most people try to avoid going around and talking about the A they got on a science test in seventh grade.

7. "Can you even get a job with that?"

Yes, there are tons of jobs in the arts field. Art majors can work in museums, galleries, schools or they can have their own studio.

8. "So, you just paint all day?"

There is so much more to art than painting and making pretty colors. Most art majors take several classes of different mediums like sculpting, 3D design, drawing and ceramics.

9. "What exactly do you do for class?"

Art classes teach students the skills they need to succeed in their career, just like engineering classes teach students how to become engineers.

10. "Draw a picture of me!"

As someone who doesn't draw people well, I laugh every time someone responds to my major by saying this. All art majors have their own different skills, and not everyone can draw portraits, so telling someone to draw you can be really annoying.

11. "Do you know who Leonardo Da Vinci is? I totally love the 'Mona Lisa.'"

Yes, I know who Leonardo Da Vinci is. Art majors are required to take art history classes so we can appreciate art and learn the history of famous artists. I can also analyze why Leonardo painted the way he did, and tell you an approximate date of when the piece was made by looking at the style because I learn more than just how to make art in my classes.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
