Since being away at college, I've developed a new kind of relationship with my mom. Not being in the same house together every single day has led me to appreciate her now more than ever for the beautiful, caring, and honestly hilarious individual she is. I can, and do turn to her for everything and anything. She will always be my personal doctor, my motivational speaker, my biggest fan, and my best friend. Here are 11 texts frequently sent to my mom that you will be sure to recognize if you and your mom also share this unique relationship.
1. "Hellllooooo?!"
Seriously mom, if you aren't responding to me then what could you possibly be doing?! If I don't receive instant feedback from my daily updates I start to panic, and rightfully so! Who else is supposed to care about every single thing I've eaten today?
2. "OMG, did you see that?!"
My mom is always the first person I text whenever I learn of big news with my friends and hers, or our favorite celebs on social media. I mean who else is going to know exactly what I'm talking about when ranting about that girl from the fourth grade, or gushing over Justin Bieber's new "Carpool Karaoke?"
3. "Do I look OK?"
Moms are always good for a little self esteem boost. I am guilty of sending my mom numerous pictures throughout the day whether they're selfies, perspective Instagram posts, or the occasional #OOTD (outfit of the day). Having her seal of approval never gets old.
4. "Can we make this when I'm home?!"
I'd be lying if I said I didn't watch about a thousand food videos on Facebook and Instagram every day, but I mean who doesn't? As great as our dining options are on campus, there is a whole world full of amazing, creative, home-cooked food that I can't wait to get back to. So you better believe I send almost every single one to my mom and we are slowly working our way down the delicious list every time I go back home.
5. "I think I'm dying."
No matter how severe or mild my ailment, when it comes to my mom I'm almost always on my death bed. Whether it's a headache, tired feet after a long strenuous day of walking to class, or God-forbid I actually come down with a cold I will always be her "poor baby."
6. "Can you send me_______?"
We all know the struggle of needing things and not feeling like buying them for yourself. From my favorite gluten-free oatmeal and more Emergen-C, to multiple sticks of deodorant, a new dress that I left at home, or my Blu-Ray copy of "High School Musical 3." If I need it, momma's on it.
7. "Can I come home yet?"
Although I love living in college and I'm so excited about the opportunities I have, sometimes it gets to be a lot. On those days when I have two tests to study for, a paper to write, and an online quiz due at midnight and I "just can't," my mom is the only one who knows how to turn my attitude around and remind me how far I've come and how capable I am; and that I would probably be bored out of my mind if I was home with her.
8. "This is so random."
As soon as something I don't want to forget comes to mind, I usually tell my mom immediately. No matter what time it is, no matter how absurd. If it's 7 a.m. and I want to tell her how much I love my new foundation, she's ecstatic; if it's midnight and I have a crazy idea for an adventure this summer, she pretends she's not half asleep and reminds me of how much fun I am to have around.
9. "Tell me about your day!"
In high school, I dodged this question every day because I felt as if there was nothing interesting to share. Now, this is a daily exchange that I actually look forward to. I want to know every single detail of her day no matter how boring she finds it, and even if all I can manage to do is go to my dreaded 8 a.m. and get back in bed to watch Netflix my mom is eager to hear, and often encouraging me to do so.
10. "Wish I was there," or "Wish you were here."
Neither of us like missing out on the fun things we would usually do together. Like when she meets with her close group of girlfriends who are practically my aunts, I always miss the good conversation and laughter I know they're sharing. Or when she and my dad take our puppy for a walk downtown I feel like I belong there. When it's a beautiful sunny day here in North Carolina and I'm laying by the pool, I know my mom would love to be baking right next to me or when my suitemates and I watch her favorite movie ("Pitch Perfect"), I wish she was here singing and quoting along.
11. "I love you."
I couldn't begin to count the amount of times in a day my mother tells me she loves me, and when I argue that I love her more, she always insists that she loves me the most. A repetitive exchange like this might seem a little much to some, but when it comes to my mom and I it is beyond sincere.
My mom loves me in a truly unconditional way, and I hope that I am able to give back to her at least a fraction of the love and recognition she deserves. I love you more, mommy...
