Being a music major isn't just your average major. Though many assume it's simple and there isn't much work behind it, they're wrong. The work doesn't stop just because you've left the classroom. It's not just a major, but a lifestyle.
1. We’re in 10-12 classes
This doesn’t even include our ensemble rehearsals and practicing.
2. Not to mention, most of those classes are zero credits
This means I have to go to and pay for classes that I'm not getting credit for. If I don't go, I don't graduate.
3. The reaction from extended family and friends when you tell them what you’re majoring in
They'll ask, “Oh…. so… what are you going to do with that?”
4. Missing out on beach days because you’re too busy in the practice rooms
You're never exposed to daylight.
5. Dealing with feelings of not being “good enough” on a regular basis
You’re constantly being critiqued and you’re never quite good enough for your applied teacher.
6. General Education classes
Because apparently Music History isn’t considered a history class.
7. You spend more time in the music department than you do in your dorm/apartment
Whenever you’re not in class, you’re in the practice rooms; they might as well have beds in there!
8. You’re constantly told you won’t make money in your profession
If I had a dime for every time someone told me, “Make sure you have a backup plan,” I’d be rich.
9. Your non-music major friends constantly tell you that your major is “easy”
Yes, because being in class and practicing all day everyday is easy.
10. Always having five things to do at one time
On top of practicing, we have to study, write reports and have endless hours of homework to do, too.
11. It’s expensive
Instruments, reeds, sheet music, printer ink, staff paper — the list goes on and on.
But still, it’s your passion, and you wouldn’t trade it for anything else. You have absolutely no idea where your life would be without music. You know that every minute of sweat and tears is worth it when you get to make beautiful art with your friends and you've never felt so lucky to be able to study something you love so much.
