Those of us who are single can sometimes give off the vibe that we loathe or are jealous of the people caught up in relationships. Yes, I'll admit that I've heard people exclaim how they wish they had a significant other to take them on dates and buy them cute presents (even though that rarely happens nowadays). However, I've also heard those who have realized the beauty in being single, even on what is, supposedly, the most romantic holiday of the year. They embrace their unattached lifestyle and bask in all of its glory, providing themselves all of the enjoyment of being in a relationship, without actually being in a relationship. They don't hate Valentine's Day because they know being single on this day can be just as much fun as going on a date, and here are a few reasons they've come up with.
1. You don't have to dress up.
Valentine's Day is on a Sunday this year. Sunday is usually your day to sit back, relax, recover from your hangover, and stay up all night doing your homework that's due on Monday. If you had to go out and celebrate with your significant other, this routine would definitely be messed up by having to put on actual clothes and actual makeup. Definitely not the move.
2. Buying gifts is unnecessary.
Guess what? You don't need to stress out about spending just the right amount of money to find the perfect gift. That's awesome.
3. You don't need to share your wine.
Or champagne. Or vodka. Or rum. Or any type of alcohol! If it takes you a full bottle of wine to feel the buzz, there's no need to worry about being courteous and having to share your bottle.
4. There are no expectations to live up to.
You can't disappoint anyone! Everyone expects Valentine's Day to be this magical, romantic day, so when one thing does not go as planned it feels as if the entire day is ruined. Good thing you can avoid that pressure.
5. The amount of chocolate on sale on the 15th is endless.
Get to the stores as soon as they open on the 15th. There will be sales on chocolate, sweets, and ice cream- and lots of singles waiting to eat them.
6. You can figure out who else is single.
If you're particularly interested in figuring out if that guy in your dorm is single, Valentine's Day is the perfect day to make your move. You might have to be creative when figuring out how to strike up a conversation, but once that's done you can do anything.
7. You can celebrate with your friends.
Not being in love with someone should not deprive you of the chance to go out! If you do want to celebrate, I'm sure you can convince some of your friends to go out and have a good time.
8. Ordering enough food for two people doesn't look suspicious.
Uh, yes, can I have a large pizza, two milkshakes, and a box of chocolate please?
9. No need to find a vase to put roses in.
Who has a vase in a dorm room? Or the space for a vase in a dorm room? No one does. So rather than having to go through the hassle of finding one for maybe two weeks while you wait for flowers to die, you can avoid the struggle altogether.
10. Buying gifts for others is unnecessary, but buying them for yourself is awesome.
Showing up to class with a new necklace is completely acceptable. If someone asks you who got it for you, look them directly in the eye and explain how you don't need anyone to buy you gifts. Treat yo self.
11. You're saving money. Probably a lot of it.
My Cup of Noodles dinner with a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream for dessert seems extremely appetizing when I realize I'm saving the money that I'll need when I'm broke at the end of the semester.
