The CW's hit television show, Supernatural, is adored by many fans all across the globe. If you haven't watched it, odds are that you've at least heard of it, considering it's been on the air for over a decade. If you're in need of a new show to binge-watch on Netflix, Supernatural just might be your cup of tea; or more accurately, your shot of whiskey.
Supernatural is about two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, who travel cross-country to fight any and all things that go "bump" in the night. Although the family business isn't as easy as the Winchesters realize as the years go on. Sam, Dean, and their companions face the seemingly impossible and try not to lose themselves along the way, which becomes incredibly more difficult with the more foreboding things they go up against in order to ensure the priceless value of humanity.
Here are some reasons why you should watch:
1. The Characters
Each character of Supernatural is carefully constructed. While the archetypes of Sam, Dean, and Castiel (their angel partner-in-crime) are easily identifiable.
Sam is the bookworm/researcher.
Dean is a "shoot first, ask questions later" kind of guy.
And Castiel is... well, Cas is just amazing, which could only be expected from a warrior of Heaven.
Despite these characterizations, they are not static or unchanging. Throughout the series, they develop and grow, just as anyone does in life. There are also many other characters to love.
There's the seemingly crotchety old man, Bobby.
The sassy villain, Crowley.
And the kick-ass, (non-misogynistically portrayed) lesbian techie, Charlie.
With a wide variety of characters, it's hard to just pick one favorite!
2. Humor
Without any laughs, Supernatural would be far too serious for both the characters and the viewers. Thankfully, there's tons of comic relief to help balance out all the angst.
Leave it to Dean to slide in a dirty joke or two... sometimes three.
There's ZERO concept of the fourth wall.
Physical comedy is a thing, too.
Cas's (often unintentional) sass is a force to be reckoned with.
And of course, the Ghostfacers.
Yes, that's a giant, alcoholic teddy bear. Don't ask.
Moving on...
3. The References
There are a lot of diamond-in-the-rough references made on the show.
Some are old...
And some are new...
4. Good Music
If you like classic rock, you're in luck. Supernatural is chock-full of it. There are episodes that share titles with old hits and several references to rock legends and iconic lyrics throughout the series.
Sam and Dean use rock aliases.
Passing down wisdom to the children of tomorrow.
Rockin' out to Seger.
Although, there are some surprises...
But of course, Kansas's "Carry On Wayward Son" is and always will be the anthem of Supernatural.
5. The Impala
A true Supernatural fan can identify Baby, Dean's beloved '67 Chevrolet Impala, by the roar of her engine or the squeakiness of her doors. If there's one thing you need to know about the show, it's "driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole."
Beast on the streets, beauty in the seats.
Under the hood...
And you might find some weird things if you pop the trunk...
6. Badassery
Action, blood, and guts (and some other gross stuff) galore! Sam and Dean hunt monsters, so of course there's a lot of ass-kicking going on.
Ghost, meet iron.
Demons, meet Cas.
And, that one time Dean took down some baddies with a dishtowel and cooking pot.
Plus, who doesn't look badass with an eye patch and draped in ammo?
8. The Feels
I'm not going to lie to you, Supernatural hurts... like, a lot... but what's a good show without some heart-wrenching pain?
There will be tears...
And tears...
And, you guessed it, tears.
Just know that if you start watching the show, there's no turning back. You'll inevitably become addicted, and therefore susceptible to all the feels. My only advice to you is to keep some tissues handy, especially during the finales.
9. The Lessons It Teaches Us
Despite the fact Sam, Dean, and Cas's problems are often apocalyptic and so much bigger than our own, Supernatural still teaches us valuable morals...
Like to always keep fighting...
To be humble and have hope...
To stand up for yourself, resist, and rebel...
But, perhaps the most important thing that Supernatural teaches us is that you can pick your family.
10. The Cast
The writing of the characters isn't the only thing that makes Supernatural great. Jared Padalecki (Sam), Jensen Ackles (Dean), and Misha Collins (Cas) truly bring the characters to life.
They know their characters like the back of their hands.
They love their fans.
And, they all involve themselves with charity, like Jared's Always Keep Fighting campaign...
And Misha's work with Random Acts and GISHWHES.
Plus, they're all really good friends and incredibly attractive and funny. What more could you want?!
11. The Legacy
The last reason why you should watch Supernatural is because it's a cultural phenomenon. It's the longest consecutively running sci-fi show in the history of television with 241 episodes aired and another season on the way.
Season 12 is coming this fall!
And according to the CW, the show will go on indefinitely so long as the cast still wants to do the show and the ratings stay up!
So, if you need something new to watch with some sustenance and love classic rock, witty humor, and paranormal action, then Supernatural just might be the show for you.
