I've been in choirs on and off since second grade, and what a wonderful journey it has been and continues to be. Here I'm mostly speaking from my experiences singing in a church or school choir; but honestly all form of making music collectively are a unique joy. Choir is a great way to grow as a musician, learn about myself and make lifelong friends.
1. Great activity for the socially awkward
Do you feel like this puppy in social situations? In choir, there's a concrete task to accomplish which eases conversations for some folks!
2. Learn random music theory and music history facts without having to take a class in either of those.
All the fun of being a music major with minimal suffering, seminars, toil or hours of daily practicing.
3. Improve your sense of rhythm
Always a great skill to have in your life! It can improve your dancing, some forms of exercise (ones involving breath control) and much more!
4. Performance is a practical skill.
Performing in choir robes at church or school translates well to that presentation you have to deliver next week for work!5. Making art with your body is fun.
Self-knowledge and truly owning the body you inhabit is powerful!
6. Making art with other people is ever more fun.
The music will last a moment, the happy memories and awkward photos will last a lifetime!
7. (Often) Sing in different languages and styles that you would never hear on the radio.
Travel around the world in one choir practice. One year we sang in Hungarian, German, Latin, Arabic and Estonian!
8. Singing is a sophisticated, resume-worthy hobby.
Who doesn't need more sophistication in their life?
9. Learning new things about music and yourself.
Who doesn't like feeling smart by proxy when you teach others!10. Teamwork without sports!
As my director says, teamwork makes the dream work
11. Pushing your personal limits.
Who wouldn't want to join a choir? Get started today!!!
