11 Promises To Make Yourself For A New Semester

With a new semester ready to begin, it makes sense that you look back on your previous semesters as you look forward to the one ahead. Everyone has things they want to do differently or things that want to cut out or add. Every semester is a growing period, where you learn more about yourself as a person and more about what kind of person you want to become. College is the time to redefine, reconfigure and revise the person you are. Spring semester is hectic and crazy and a ton of fun but these 11 promises are ones to keep as we begin another 15 weeks of college.

1. I promise to read all of the assigned readings.

I’m a senior and I have never read every reading assigned for any class, I promise myself to do it every semester but it never quite works out. So here I go again with another semester and the same promise, maybe this time it will last.

2. I promise to eat vegetable at least once a day every day.

With dining hall food and the ease of just grabbing something and eating it on the go. I find myself veggie-less more often than I should. So this semester I promise to eat vegetables, even if it happens to be the fried zucchini in the dining hall.

3. I promise to actually work out if I wear workout clothes.

It is so easy to throw on work out pants and a hoodie and go about my day and mention to people that I plan on going to the gym later on. This semester I’ll actually go to the gym in my workout clothes.

4. I promise not to leave assignments until the last minute.

This goes back to number 1. But life is all about trying and not giving up, so this is the one last semester I have to maybe actually do it.

5.I promise to go out at least once on the weekends.

Even with snow and sleet and freezing temperatures, college is the time to make fun memories. So I will put Netflix and my Kindle down and go make some memories at least once a weekend.

6. I promise to not beat myself up for eating pizza after midnight

College is the only time in your life where it is completely acceptable to order a bacon and olive pizza at midnight and eat the majority of it in one sitting. Might as well make the most of it before I graduate so I will leave the guilt at the door once my pizza gets here.

7.I promise to explore my college town more.

The town I go to school in is adorable and quaint and awesome and deserves more of my time. Besides who doesn’t like a nice study break to the waterfront on a weekend, because I know I do.

8. I promise to get coffee with people.

So many times I mention grabbing a cup of coffee with someone and catching up but rarely do I follow through. This semester I will actually grab that coffee and talk with the people who make my college experience the memorable one that it is.

9. I promise to accept the days where deep lunging into pants is the only option.

Between the fun and the stress and the other things that go along with college, there are just some days where it all catches up to you and none of your pants seem to be going on easy. It is time to just accept that and move on and see item 3 on the list.

10. I promise to take and post more pictures.

When I am looking back on my college days I am going to want pictures both as proof I did it and to refresh my mind when I start to forget. So here is too more awkward selfies this semester!

11.) I promise to laugh more and stress less.

College is finite, and we need to take every moment we have and make it count.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
