I must say that the middle child lives a pretty awesome life. The thought of the middle child being neglected, forgotten about, and kicked to the curb is just a big fat lie to make us feel bad about ourselves. Well, for the most part. What people fail to see are the many positive aspects which come along with being the middle child, and in my scenario, being the middle sibling of three sisters. Here are just a few reasons why growing up in the middle should always be appreciated.
- You don’t have to face many new experiences on your own. The older sibling is the one who has to worry about facing new situations with no one as their guide. By the time your turn rolls around, you already have the inside scoop on what to expect. You know which teachers not to take, how to complete college apps, and the pain level of getting braces.
- Being that the elder has experienced many things that you have not, they can tell you what to avoid, and the tricks of being successful. You can learn from their mistakes, before you make the same mistakes yourself.
- Having an older sibling means you get everything passed down to you. This does not mean that you don’t get new things too, you actually get the best of both worlds. Some of these secret gems include old school projects and clothes (and even if she doesn’t give them to you, you will probably steal one or two things from her closet).
- You have your own personal chauffeur before you could get your license. No more nagging your parents to give you a ride to the mall; it has now become now the duty of your older sibling. Your parents liked this idea as well, and almost always made sure that you would get where you wanted to go, as long as they no longer had to stay up late to get you home.
- Your parents get more lenient when it comes your time to ask permission for something. Usually, the older sibling has to wait a longer time for something they want (such as a cellphone and unlimited texting, TBT), but when it’s your turn they don’t care as much.
- You never get last pick, and never get the short end of the stick. Usually the older sibling goes first, and the younger sibling gets to choose last. You will also never get stuck sitting in the middle seat of the car.
- You also get to be the overprotective big sibling. You will always be looking out for your younger sibling and make sure that no one is bothering them. You will be the first to hear about any problem and the first to fix it, no matter what your sibling has to say about it.
- You get to guide your little sibling through new experiences, and tell them your stories. Mostly explaining what not to do, and how to avoid getting into trouble so no one ends up in unfortunate situations like you have.
- But it actually ends up that it is your little sibling who tries to keep YOU out of trouble, to avoid your parents lashing out on the whole family for your naive mistakes. They know that the anger will be taken out on them too, and try to save us all before it happens. This often involves cover stories and a lot of worrying (I should learn to start listening to her more often).
- You can have a strong bond with your little sibling, and NOT treat her in the negative ways your older sibling treated you. You know the downfall of being the little sibling, which leads to your little sister having a favorite big sister (that is me).
- If your older sibling isn’t around for advice, you can always vent to your little sibling about your problems. She may not always know what to say, but she will be awesome at agreeing with you and making you feel better about any situation.
So, there you have it. Being the middle child isn’t so bad after all. I can’t even think of a single reason NOT to love it.
