When it comes to being a fangirl of multiple fandoms, I have found that almost everything and anything can be related to a fandom of mine. I have come to notice that most of my friends don't quite understand the references I constantly make or the emotional toil I go through on the daily basis. But if one thing is constant in my geeky relationships I have with my non-geeky friends, is the constant struggle of making references.
1. Your friend just brought something up that relates to your fandom…
This is your moment! Your mind is racing. You’re scrolling through trying to find the right gif and make the right reference.
2. Now you wait for the GIF and the references to send…
The suspense is killing you! During the wait, you start to think that you could have found a better gif or you could have made a difference reference or maybe you were being a little too excited and should calm it down
3. Your message has been received and your friend is typing… and all they send is, “What?”
Noooo! My reference! Maybe they just didn’t see that movie… or it’s more like a funny "what?"…
4. Well, now you’ve got to explain your reference.
You’ve got to strategically think about how to explain your movie. It’s basically rocket science trying to make it as simple as you can as to not ruin anything.
5. But even after explaining, your friend just doesn’t quite get the reference, so you ask the fated question…
Do you watch (fandom of choice)? But your friend says, “No. I don’t understand what that means.”
But…why... I mean… I thought we connected for a second...
6. Well, this whole situation got really awkward.
So do we just move on from this moment or do I try to justify my reference or like what would Captain America do in this situation?!
7. Even after the subject has been changed, you're still dying on the inside.
All you can think about if how you failed your fandom. This could have been a moment to convert a person or find out that your friend is secretly a fan.
8. After a day or two, you run into your friend and they look at you like, “Really… did you try to make a reference on a topic I have no clue about?”
You just stand there like a sad little puppy with your hands behind your back and you reply with “I forgot… my bad.”
9. You tell yourself that you have to work on who you tell your references to because most people just don't quite get it.
You always say “I know they don’t know this fandom. If I make a reference, they won’t get it and they don’t care about the explanation”... But we know how it will end.
10. It doesn’t matter who many days pass from the last time you made a reference.
You just get a little to excited and tend to forget everything you just spent days on working on. Did they just say the word "lightning"… where is my Thor GIF?
11. Being a fan isn’t a bad thing…
It just means that you have to find people who get your references and not bother your non-geeky friends with info they don’t need.
