11 Things Minnesotans Are Sick Of Hearing
Johnny Slocum

Here’s the thing, each state has their little antics and sayings, right? But for some reason, when it comes to Minnesota, everything seems out of place and not correct. Minnesotans get the wrath of saying things improperly. We get the wrath of doing things differently and completely out of the norm.

Currently, I’m a Minnesotan that lives in Missouri. For some odd reason, whenever I tell someone that I am from Minnesota, I get the stereotypical questions and statements fired back at me. And let me tell you, they can get pretty annoying.

So here are the 11 statements and questions Minnesotans are tired of hearing.

1. “Minnesooooota”

I’m glad you know where I’m from, and thank you for emphasizing my accent in the process.

2. “You’re from Minnesota, you should be used to the cold.”

Yes, in Minnesota it can be minus 10 degrees with a wind chill of minus 20, but that does not mean that I thrive in temperatures that are 40 degrees or colder.

3. “Does it ever get warm in Minnesota?”

Surprise, surprise! There are actually four seasons in Minnesota. One of those seasons is summer, and in the summer it can actually get into the 90s with humidity!

4. “I bet Starbucks is way better than Caribou Coffee.”

Please retract that statement and never say it to a Minnesotan ever again.

5. “What does ‘uff da’ mean?”

Wait … you don’t know what "uff da" means?

6. “The mosquitos can’t be that bad in Minnesota.”

Come to Minnesota in the summer, walk outside at around 9 p.m., and let me know how you feel about that statement.

7. “Is the Minnesota State Fair as great as everyone says it is?”

Every food item placed on a stick, all-you-can-drink milk, and endless hours of people-watching. Yes, it’s fantastic!

8. “What’s a tator-tot hot dish?"

A heavenly meal made from the hands of God.

9. “It’s ‘soda,’ not ‘pop.’”

No, it’s “pop,” not “soda.”

10.“You say ‘bag’ weird.”

Thank you for pointing out a word that I can’t say properly.

11.“Why do you say ‘grey duck’ instead of ‘goose’?”

Why do you say “goose” instead of “grey duck”?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
