11 Lessons We Learned From Shonda Rhimes TV Shows

It’s finally that time of the year again. A time when we start looking forward to Thursday nights more than Friday nights. A time when we grab a bowl of popcorn, an over-sized glass of red wine, and/or a bottle of tequila, and sit back and be entertained. A time when we all go from being a surgeon, to a gladiator, to a lawyer in the short span of three hours.

If you are anything like me, Thursday night’s are more than just a time for great television; they are a religious experience. The woman behind this addiction to Thursday nights is Shonda Rhimes. For those of you who do not know, Shonda is the creator and writer of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” and is an executive producer for both shows, as well as “How To Get Away With Murder.” All three of these shows can be viewed from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Thursday nights on ABC.

To get us all hyped for the return of our three favorite network dramas, let’s take a look at some of the most valuable life lessons we learned from the shows that have destroyed our emotions, captured our hearts and stolen our social lives…

(WARNING: May contain spoilers.)

1. No one is more important than our person...

2. They taught us that sexism is a part of our community in ways that we may not even realize...

3. Cristina Yang taught us that we should not let anything come before ourselves and our future…

4. They taught us that racism is still a large issue in our country and that some people need to check their white privilege...

5. And that you should be comfortable and confident in who you really are…

6. They taught us that love and family can come in all different shapes and sizes...

7. They taught us how to love someone with more passion than one person can physically handle…

8. They taught us how to deal with loss...

9. And how not to deal with loss...

10. They taught us how to drink...

11. We learned that our lives would not be complete without the characters created and produced by Shonda Rhimes...

12. We love you Shonda (most of the time).

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
