It's probably safe to assume that Disney Channel Original Movies were a large part of the lives of children that had cable when they were younger; plopping down in front of the television with your pajamas on at 8 pm was a daily ritual, as was begging your parents to let you stay up until the end of the movie, even though you had seen it countless times. Here's just eleven of the many movies you probably snuck out of your bed to watch the ending of after your parents denied you the right to watch them past bedtime.
1. "Brink!"
This movie was the reason my brother and I were always outside roller blading. Andy “Brink” Brinker and his friends consider themselves “soul skaters” and are constantly in competition with another group of skaters—Team X-Blades—who are sponsored and skate for money. Let’s be honest, you would’ve thrown a milkshake in Val’s face too. #TeamPupNSuds
2. "Double Teamed"
I’ve never been good at basketball, but this movie made me wish I was. Twins Heather and Heidi Burge learn the importance of working together as well as with other teammates in order to win. If you didn’t want a twin after this movie, I’m totally judging you right now.
3. "Motocrossed"
When Andrea’s twin brother injures his leg, she takes his place and competes as him in motocross races. Andrea, who changes her name to Andy, meets Dean, another racer, who aids her and helps her win races. Dean and Andy’s relationship goes from weird to kind of creepy; going from being best “dude” friends to being boyfriend and girlfriend? Sounds a little awkward to me, but that's none of my business.
4. "Smart House"
Ben Cooper wins a house in a raffle for himself and a family, but there’s a twist: the house is extremely advanced and is run by a computer named Pam; things eventually go haywire and Pam goes bat-shit crazy. I have never heard of someone giving away a house for free, let alone to someone under the age of eighteen. However, this movie was so entertaining, but it made me feel like my house was such a let down.
5. "Color of Friendship"
Mahree is a foreign exchange student that comes from a family of bigots who live in South Africa; Mahree goes to live with Piper and her family, who happen to be African American. The girls learn to set aside their differences and eventually learn that being judgmental gets people nowhere in life. This was one of many Disney Channel Original Movies that taught me a real life lesson that I could apply to my own life.
6. "Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century"
Zetus lepetus! This movie featuring Zenon, the girl of the 21st century, had everyone using weird space slang and wishing to be Proto Zoa’s “Super Nova Girl”. This movie follows Zenon around on her antics and adventures on her space station home with her friend Nebula.
7. "Gotta Kick It Up"
A dance team learns to work with each other in order to make it to Nationals through hard work and dedication; if this movie didn’t have you chanting “Si se puede!”, then there’s something very wrong with you.
8. "Halloweentown"
Every year, Disney shows this movie during Halloween time and every year, I sit in front of my television and watch it because it never gets old. Follow Marnie and her family as they fight against evil spirits and beings in order to save Halloweentown, Marnie’s grandmother’s hometown, and watch Marnie and her siblings grow up and learn what having magic is all about.
9. "The 13th Year"
The movie that actually made being a merman or mermaid seem difficult; Cody Griffin is popular in school, a top-notch swimmer, and just recently turned thirteen. However, strange things start happening to his body and he starts to wonder if he’s actually human. Remember kids: if you’re growing fins and creating electrical surges, ask your parents where you’re really from.
10. "Pixel Perfect"
Ricky Ullman stars as Roscoe the genius who creates a hologram, Loretta (played by Spencer Radford) to be the lead singer in his friend Samantha’s (played by Leah Pipes) band. Things go awry with Loretta, which in turn causes problems for the band and Roscoe. “Nothing’s Wrong With Me” was definitely the jam when this movie premiered.
11. "Full Court Miracle"
A movie that wasn’t too popular, but was definitely a crowd favorite; a group of teenage Jewish basketball players obtains a new coach who helps teach them what winning feels like, but also helps them appreciate their families and their heritage. I’ll be the first to say that I was obsessed with this movie when I was younger and I couldn’t wait for Hanukkah to come because I knew this movie would come on.
Although Disney has changed its ways and no longer airs Disney Channel Original Movies daily, you can still catch them during the wee hours of the morning. Growing up on these movies taught me a lot; it’s safe to say that these movies are my childhood.
