11 Clubs At Chapman You Should Check Out

In these clubs, you can connect with fellow students over topics like memes, politics, singing, and Disneyland.

This list of eleven clubs illustrates the varied interests and talents of our student body. Facebook pages or groups are provided here if they exist, and all clubs can be found on OrgSync as well. For more clubs, go to the club fair in the Piazza within the first few weeks of school.

1. The Player’s Society

The Player’s Society, referred to as 'TPS' by its members, is probably best known on the Chapman campus for their production of Rocky Horror every fall (a show that yours truly was in last year). However, TPS is much more than just a club paying homage to cult classics; it’s a club about friendship and laughter and fun. More things you can find in TPS meetings: memes, pop culture references, embarrassing personal stories, and ridiculous Youtube videos. Junior Jillian Strong says that her fellow club members are, “some of the most wonderful and inspiring people I've met. They each bring something new to the club that makes it special.” Another notable event in the club’s history was last spring’s production of Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, which featured original one-acts set in the world of the original movie. If that’s not creativity and talent, I don’t know what is. When asked to describe the club in three words, Strong responded, “chilling, thrilling, and fulfilling.” https://www.facebook.com/ChapmanTPS

2. I Am That Girl

I Am That Girl is an international nonprofit organization with chapters all over the country, including one at Chapman University. The mission statement of IATG is to provide a community/support system that inspires young women to love and express themselves and be who they are. The club is designed as a safe space to talk about anything important to them and really dig deep into some of the more difficult issues facing society today. The members lift each other up and help each other become the best versions of themselves. When I asked current president Kayla Topp (junior) why people should join IATG, she said, “If you're looking for a place to get real, talk about everything from body image to gratitude to relationships to healthy media, create change in our society, and find a welcoming family, then IATG is definitely for you!!” You can contact Topp at topp101@mail.chapman.edu and her co-president Lindsay Robb (junior) at robb102@mail.chapman.edu. https://www.facebook.com/BeThatGirlChapmanU

3. Chapman Republicans

In this day and age, college students are very enthusiastic about politics and changing the world. Chapman Republicans is a great place to participate in passionate discussions about politics. The club is on the smaller side, but the group is close-knit, and its members represent a wide variety of opinions. Weekly meetings provide students a forum to banter about current events, candidates, and party topics. They also attend speaker events and learn about internships with local political campaigns. Senior Jasmine Morgan, a passionate Republican, insists, “even if you aren't sure where you stand politically, definitely come check us out!” https://www.facebook.com/chapmanrepublicans

4. Club 55

Chapman is filled with Disneyland love, and you can often find it on display in Club 55 meetings. The club “involves every aspect of the Disney company,” says sophomore Ellie Schlosser. Their events range from movie nights, trips to Disneyland, and fun guest speakers. Last semester, the club had a Frozen-themed study break where members of club watched the film and then got Ghiradelli sundaes afterwards – yum!! If you love Disney, this is definitely a club for you. Bonus: it’s a good way to find more passholder buddies! https://www.facebook.com/ChapmanClub55

5. Simply Vocale

Simply Vocale is Chapman’s all-female a cappella singing group. They rehearse twice a week and occasionally perform at on and off-campus events. Sophomore Alice Tsui says her favorite part about Simply Vocale is how performing together is a bonding activity. Tsui told me, “Honestly, I love how close we all are. Singing with other people is an extremely collaborative effort, and it kind of ties us all together. We're all really close outside of rehearsals, too. They're like my little family.” If you like singing, music, and performing, attend their auditions the first week of school! More information about auditions and shows will be on their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/ChapmanSimplyVocale

6. Active Minds

College can be extremely stressful and taxing on one’s mental health – and mental illness is not something most college students feel comfortable talking about. Lucky for Chapman students, there is a club called Active Minds. It’s dedicated to promoting mental health and wellness as well as decreasing the ever-present stigma society has placed on the mentally ill. The club brings speakers to campus and leads presentations and group discussions on suicide prevention and awareness. If you’ve been on campus during finals week, you’ve probably witnessed one of the club’s major events, called “Furry Friends For Finals,” where therapy dogs are brought to campus for students to cuddle with as a way to de-stress. The current co-presidents are juniors Hannah Malus and Carmin Portea, and you can contact them at malus100@mail.chapman.edu and porte146@mail.chapman.edu for more information. https://www.facebook.com/groups/36370154459/

7. Chapman Rotaract

Chapman Rotaract is a relatively new service organization on campus. Rotaract is the collegiate level of Rotary International, a worldwide organization of working professionals dedicated to making an impact on their community. Their international causes include eliminating Polio and providing clean water to as many people as possible. Rotaract is a great fellowship and networking opportunity, and they work closely with their sponsor club, Orange Rotary. In addition to service and community-building, Chapman Rotaract offers a chance for students to take on leadership positions and develop valuable skill sets for the future. For more information about Chapman Rotaract, please contact Nikki Soni (junior) at soni102@mail.chapman.edu. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chapman-Universitys...

8. American Sign Language Club

The ASL Club is open to all levels of signers, whether you know the whole alphabet or have no sign language experience at all! Everyone is welcome to attend meetings to practice their sign language while also learning more about the language and its culture. This fall, Chapman will be introducing ASL 101, 102, and 201 classes, so if you’ve always been interesting in Sign Language, now is your chance to explore it while getting  college credit. Meeting times and locations are currently TBD, but you can find them on OrgSync for more information. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chapman-ASL-Club/23...

9. Delta Sigma Pi

Delta Sigma Pi is technically a business fraternity and not a club, but definitely a useful group to know about, since Business is a popular major at Chapman. Senior Tiffany Ho describes Delta Sigma Pi as, “a co-ed business fraternity dedicated to the fostering the study of business, growth of professionalism, encouraging brotherhood, and helping the community.” The fraternity is only open to business, accounting, economics, and CIS majors. The organization is very involved in community service and hosts an annual event called Santa Claus Inc. where they prepare gifts for children. Ho says you should join because, “we can help you ignite your potential as a future leader in the business world and the community.” https://www.facebook.com/pages/Delta-Sigma-Pi-Chap...

10. Chapman QSA

Chapman QSA, which stands for Queer-Straight Alliance, is a safe group on campus where students can learn about the diversity that exists in our world. When I spoke with Social Chair Luis Casavantes (junior), he said that meetings don’t always follow the same pattern, and rotate between “social events, discussions, laid back nights, movie nights, and sometimes we have other fun events planned outside our regular meetings.” Everyone is welcome regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. If you want to open your mind and learn about one of the facets of diversity on our campus, you should definitely check out QSA. https://www.facebook.com/groups/chapmanqsa/

11. Improv Inc.

If you like to make others laugh and you’re really good at coming up with clever material on the spot, check out Improv Inc! Improv Inc. is Chapman’s resident improv troupe and they perform both long form and short form improv styles.  Everything you see in their shows is completely spontaneous, and they rehearse every week in order to be on top of their game. It’s hard to get in, so even if you don’t end up joining, they have shows twice a month to enjoy; “F#&@ Mondays” shows on Mondays and “Pregame Shows” on Thursdays. Make sure to ‘like’ the Facebook page to get info on shows and auditions! If you want to contact current president Ryan Stiffelman, (senior) you can email him at ryan.stiffelman@gmail.com. https://www.facebook.com/improvinc

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
