I recently took a weekend trip to New York and felt the pain that is being so close to "Hamilton," yet so far away from seeing it. As a tried and true Broadway fan, I can personally attest to being utterly In love
with the rap musical based off of the life of Alexander Hamilton, despite not being able to see it live on stage. Unfortunately, like many other theatergoers, I just don't have a spare $1,000 sitting around to spend on Broadway tickets. As a result, most of us theater-geeks are waiting not-so-patiently for "Hamilton" to tour. My solution? Serial watching several other shows in the meantime. Here are 11 awesome Broadway shows to help tide you over if you're a broke and impatient "Hamilton" lover like me.1. Chicago
A classic Broadway musical, "Chicago" is known for its incredible Fosse-style dance numbers and dramatic representations of sin and corruption in one of the nation's largest cities.
2. Fiddler on the Roof
Another classic musical, "Fiddler on the Roof" follows Tevye, who is a father of five daughters in the small Jewish community of Anatevka. Set in 1905 in Russia, the musical explores the complex topics of tradition in the face of change and tense intercultural relations.
3. The Lion King
Of course I had to include "The Lion King" in this list of shows. With its incredible props, costumes, and special effects, paired with songs that will be stuck in your head for a week, "The Lion King" is the perfect show for everyone.
4. The Phantom of the Opera
The current longest running musical on Broadway, "The Phantom of the Opera" has in no means lost its appeal over time. The haunting love triangle between Christine, Raoul, and the infamous Phantom will break your heart every time.
5. The Book of Mormon
One of the funniest shows on Broadway, "The Book of Mormon," follows two Mormon missionaries as they travel overseas to try to convert Ugandans to their religion. Written by the creators of "South Park," "The Book of Mormon" is definitely NOT a kids show.
6. Wicked
Yes, "Wicked" is still on Broadway. So, if you still haven't seen it (in which case, how?), or you're wanting to see it again, the untold story behind the Wicked Witch of the West will always be there for you. Literally always. It's everywhere.
7. Finding Neverland
If your inner child is screaming right now at the prospect of Neverland, then this is the show for you. Follow playwright J.M. Barrie in his adventures as he creates the story and characters that we all know and love.
8. Matilda
Do any of you remember this movie? How about the book by Roald Dahl? Well, it's a musical now. Watch as Matilda, a brilliant young girl with a flair for storytelling, rises up to defeat the evil principal of Crunchem Hall Primary School, Miss Trunchbull.
9. School of Rock
Now I'm sure you all remember this movie (Jack Black, anyone?). In "School of Rock," guitarist Dewey Finn recruits students at the Horace Green school to play with him against his former band, No Vacancy, in the local Battle of the Bands, all while pretending to be his roommate, substitute teacher Ned Schneebly. The most impressive part of the Broadway version is that the kids play their instruments live onstage every night!
10. Something Rotten
In "Something Rotten," Nick Bottom (who is based off of a character by the same name from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream") faces off against the Bard himself. Nick, a playwright who is tired of being overlooked in a world where only Shakespeare's plays matter, pays a fortune teller to reveal what the next big thing in theater will be. Armed with the information that the fortune teller gives, Nick and his brother Nigel set out to write the very first musical. As long as you know enough Shakespeare quotes to understand the jokes,"Something Rotten" is sure to make you laugh!
11. An American in Paris
Dance-lovers, this one's for you. With its leads from dance companies such as San Francisco Ballet and The Royal Ballet, the dancing in "An American in Paris" is absolutely to die for!
