After the success of the Cosby Show in the mid-1980s, the idea of a predominantly black casted sitcom became a popular trend well into the mid-2000s. The golden age, however, was definitely in the 1990s. To ensure that the legacy of these groundbreaking shows forever live on, here's a list of 11 black sitcoms to show your kids as they grow up in the 21st century:

1. Sister, Sister (1994-1999)

Twin sisters separated at birth are reunited in this family-oriented television show. The sisters' growing pains as they adjust to their new life together will be the perfect show for your 13-year-old daughter.

2. The Steve Harvey Show (1996-2002)

This sitcom tells the story of Steve Hightower's life post-stardom as the music teacher at the local high school. With the comedic genius of Steve Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer, this show will surely be a knockout with your kids.

3. Living Single (1993-1998)

Still standing as one of the most popular sitcoms of the 90s, this show about the ever-evolving lives of 6 twentysomethings who live in Brownstone in the middle of New York is perfect for the child with big dreams of moving to the Big Apple.

4. The Parent 'Hood (1995-1999)

Arguably the most underrated black sitcom of the 90s, this show chronicles the life of Robert and Jerri Peterson as they raise their 4 children in Harlem, New York. This show's definitely for the pre-teen aged child.

5. Smart Guy (1997-1999)

This sitcom is perfect for that bookworm of yours, as it tells the story of 10-year-old boy genius TJ Henderson and his efforts to fit in when he's suddenly placed in the 10th grade at his local high school.

6. Family Matters (1989-1998)

This iconic, family-friendly television show produced one of America's most beloved characters: Steve Urkel. This one will appeal to younger adolescents and pre-teens.

7. Martin (1992-1997)

This hilarious show chronicles the never-ending shenanigans of disc jockey Martin Payne and his girlfriend, Gina. This show is definitely for the class clown or anyone that's up for incessant humor.

8. Moesha (1996-2001)

Mo to the, E to the! This popular sitcom is great for the average teenager, as Moesha, Hakeem, Kim, and Niecy serve as ideal, but realistic, role models. They'll also get a good feel for 90s culture, thanks to countless guest appearances from R&B and Hip-Hop stars of that time.

9. A Different World (1987-1993)

A Different World is the portrayal of the ultimate HBCU experience at the fictional Hillman College. What first began as a spin-off of The Cosby Show, blossomed into the running narrative of what is is to be young and black in America, and is a perfect fit for the child that's on their way to college.

10. The Parkers (1999-2004)

A spin-off of Moesha, the show follows Kim and her mother, Nikki, as they embark on their college journey together. With laugh-out-loud humor and great chemistry among the cast, this show is perfect for the child that's on their way to college.

11. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996)

Your child will definitely love the narrative of 16-year-old Will Smith, as he is plucked from his life in West Philly to live with his wealthy aunt and uncle in Bel Air, California. Whether it's Uncle Phil's no nonsense attitude, Geoffrey's timely wisecracks, or Hilary's endearing air-headed behavior, there's a character for everyone to relate to.

Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine.
