Before her brilliance was brought to the attention of millions across the world through Beyonce’s album Lemonade, Warsan Shire’s raw talent was introduced to me through a text post on Tumblr. Let’s ignore the fact that I have a Tumblr and hone in on the woman behind the text post.
Shire is a a Kenyan-born, Somali-British poet that has become a mirror to this generation of black women, with us easily seeing ourselves, our past, our truths and our disgraces her well written bodies of work.

Within these words I see pieces of my life that I was unable to bring to the surface and express in a healthy or productive way. So, I find myself time and time again diving into her works and finding a small peace of mind. I find myself realizing through her thoughts that I am not alone, I am not the only one who who has gone through strenuous trials and tribulations and for that I extend a series of endless praises to her.
