Are you tired of getting crepes every weekend at 2 a.m. in your pajamas? Do you crave entertainment, wildlife, and beer? Are you ready to crawl out of your hole of hibernation and into adventure? With midterms approaching and spring break anticipation on the rise, you may be looking for unique activities to partake in around the beautiful city of Bellingham. Next time the cabin fever hits, instead of claiming, “But there’s nothing to do in Bellingham!,” instead consider these 10 activities.
1. Walk the Big Rock Garden trail.
Nestled in the middle of a residential crook on Sylvan Street, it’s not surprising that not many people know about Big Rock Garden. The garden showcases original art sculptures created by local and international artists. Showcased at the entrance of Big Rock Garden is a description of the story surrounding each sculpture. The attraction feels like a sanctuary with many places to sit and reflect on the art and nature. During the summer, free concerts are held in the middle of the garden. Big Rock Garden is the most interesting afternoon walk you can imagine having in Bellingham.
2. Visit the Marine Life Center.
The Marine Life Center is located appropriately downtown by the docks. If you’re lucky, even on the walk to the marina, you might spot a seal or two hanging out along the shore. Upon entering the Marine Life Center, you’re surrounded by aquariums and aquatic environmental information. The center educates you about all of the interesting sea life that is local to Bellingham Bay and the surrounding ocean. Best of all, you can experience the employees feeding the octopus.
3. Visit SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention.
Next time you’re on your way to Bayou on the Bay and you pass by the SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention, instead of just glancing the museum over, head inside and buy a ticket. SPARK is filled with the history of not only the lightbulb, but the electrical inventions that follow. Many of the displays are interactive, including the opportunity to play a theremin, which the "Star Trek" theme uses to create that realistic sci-fi sound we all love. On weekends, you can attend the MegaZapper show that displays a Tesla coil producing nine-foot lightning bolts.
4. Pick something out at Eclipse Books.
Eclipse Bookstore will guarantee that you experience the most amount of books shelved and stacked knee-high in the most inefficiently efficient way. I promise you will be overwhelmed, but in a great way. Basically, the most efficient organization you can expect is to look for interesting and unique topic sections. However, the messy organization is how you find treasure. The two-story used bookstore resides in Fairhaven and overlooks the beautiful scenery of Bellingham Bay. Eclipse Books is an impressive way to waste a couple of hours.
5. Go on one of the Art Walks.
On the first Friday of every month from 6 to 10 p.m., you can attend the Art Walk in downtown Bellingham. The Art Walk gives you the opportunity to admire local artists who display their work in galleries, boutiques, and restaurants scattered throughout the downtown area.
6. Fragrance Lake hike.
Discover new territory up in the Chuckanuts! Fragrance Lake is a five-mile loop hike around a lake. While not as intense as Oyster Dome, the Fragrance Lake trail still offers a challenge with the same beautiful views of the San Juans. The stillness of the lake will accentuate your surroundings in a meditative way.
7. Check out The Comics Place
The Comics Place's quirky window display can draw in anyone who enjoys comic books, graphic novels, and board games. The employees have a knowledge pool of information on anything you’re searching for. They’re not shy about letting you know of the awesome new comic that they ordered an abundance of about a corrupt, drug-induced Santa Claus. And ladies, The Comics Place is one of the rare comic stores where an attractive female can walk in and not be gazed at in awe or disdain.
8. Grab a beer at McKay’s Taphouse.
The best brewery in town: McKay’s Taphouse. If you’re tired of the same old downtown bar scene where it’s impossible to hear one another or make new friends, McKay’s is a breath of fresh air. Located on the tip of Samish Way, it’s understandable that the family-friendly brewery gets skipped out on. The Taphouse excels at interaction. Every Wednesday is trivia night, where teams to compete for money. Brewery nights are held occasionally; local brewing companies bring their beer and a cause and raffle off free items, including growlers, pints, and other swag. Every single bartender is wonderfully friendly and willing to hold conversations and make connections with their customers.
And their pizza is amazing.
9. See a performance from The Bellingham Circus Guild.
The Bellingham Circus Guild consists of a group of performing professional and hobby circus artists. The guild holds events in their facility situated near the train station in Fairhaven. Not only can you watch circus shows involving acrobatics and juggling, you can also take classes.
10. Learn to social dance.
If you’ve ever been interested in learning a social dance, Bellingham has a huge variety of venues. Partner dancing can seem incredibly intimidating, but every community encourages learning and participation. From Wednesday night fusion to weekend Milonga’s, Bellingham offers many venues with lessons and open dance almost every night of the week. Visit danceinbellingham.com to find out more.
