10 Things You;ll Understand If You've Worked As A Server

Although it's not everyone's first choice job, a lot of us have been there. Being a waiter/waitress is often a good choice for a first job. If you've worked as a server, these are 10 struggles you'll definitely understand.

1. The embarrassment of getting an order wrong.

2. That one customer that wants to use 132 coupons to save two dollars.

3. That one customer that needs to specially order all of their food.

"A double cheese burger with extra mayo, extra onion, no pickle, little ketchup, well done, and substituted cheese, please" ???


4. Work drama.

Somehow, dealing with food all day brings out the worst in everyone.

5. Not getting tipped.

I make $2.13 an hour and just served you for an hour and a half. Don't go out to eat if you can't afford to tip.

6. Separate checks.

7. When a customer yells at you for the cooks taking forever to make the food.

8. That sinking feeling when you forget to put in an order.

9. Sidework.

10. Getting ready to get off, only to be asked to stay late.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
