Some of the best artists, modern and retro, don't receive the recognition that they deserve. Here's a few different artists you may have already heard of, and a few you should go check out.
1) The Maine
This is an indie-rock band that started off in Arizona. Their music ranges from hard rock (check out "My Heroine") to softer, more melodic songs (like "Into Your Arms"). If your music taste falls anywhere on the rock spectrum, from soft rock, to indie rock, to hard rock, The Maine has something for you. I've been fortunate enough to see them live three times. If they ever pass through your town, there's no show quite like it.
Favorite album: "Forever Halloween"
Best Lyric: I don't think I am capable of this teenage televised taping of love, so here is my guide on how to stay alone, just act like a freak and sleep with everyone you've ever known
2) Cage the Elephant
The hardcore rock of this band will rev you up whenever you need it. When you want to just let your hair down and rock out throw on some of their latest music (especially "Spiderhead"). Whenever I hear "Come a Little Closer" I get serious smoking-a-cigarrete-and-driving-through-town-in-a-corvette vibe.
Favorite Album: "Melophobia"
Best Lyric: Take me by the hand and still remember all the good times we had. I remember how you took my favorite knife and sticked under my skin.
3) Catfish and the Bottlemen
While this indie rock band has been around for a little while, their name is just starting to spread through the Twittersphere. Their rock sound combined with an indie vibe is the perfect medley of modern taste and classic 90s taste. Their music is as unique as their name.
Favorite album: "The Balcony"
Best lyric: Yes I know, that I'll never work out exactly how you're thinking but let me know when I'm needed home
4) Kodaline
Serene and harmonious, Kodaline makes the perfect music for lazy Sunday mornings and rainy days. Whether you want to relax or let a feeling of nostalgia and dreaminess fall over you, their music is the one.
Favorite Album: "In a Perfect World"
Best Lyric: All I want is nothing more than to hear you knocking at my door 'cause if I could see your face once more I could die a happy man I'm sure
5) The Kooks
This band's name is fitting for their music, different and fun with an 80s vibe to it. They manage to always throw in their own unique 80s pop sound with any type of song, whether it be more acoustic ("Seaside") or more hard rock ("Bad Habit").
Favorite Album: "Listen"
Best Lyric: Do you want to go to the seaside? I'm not trying to say that everybody wants to go, I fell in love at the seaside, I handled my charm with time and slight of hand
6) Matt Corby
Soulful is the best way to describe Matt Corby's music. When listening to this musician I truly feel like it's created solely for a feeling of self accomplishment, no gain intended, no auto tune injected. Matt Corby himself is a very traditional person and even requested at one of his shows that every single person put their phones away and simply be present in the moment and wouldn't continue performing until they did.
Favorite Album/EP: "Resolution"
Best Lyric: You couldn't help out your own neighbor, you couldn't tell it to his face, you were fucked up by the blame
7) Sticky Fingers
Basically anything by the Sticky Fingers have been my jams these past two summers. They're music is fun, eclectic and has positive vibes all over it. This Australia based band is great when you need to just chill out.
Favorite Album: "Caress Your Soul"
Best Lyric: And I remember when we'd drink, and we'd smoke and we'd spar and we'd laugh, and the night would just go on and on, for the rest of my life that memory will stay man fuck that was a good time
8) Modern Baseball
MoBo seems like they started off as a group of boys who started a garage band in their small hometown half out of boredom and half out of a love for music, that happened to get lucky. Their music is genuine and raw, and some of it sounds like it was written drunkenly on a whim...but it works for them. You can truly feel the emotion in all of their songs, be it anger ("Your Graduation"), regret ("Apartment") or plain fuckery ("The Weekend").
Favorite album: "You're Gonna Miss it All"
Best Lyric: I'll walk home with my eyes low, dreaming of conversations we'll have tomorrow.
9) Death Cab for Cutie
An oldie but goldie, you may have seen some of DCFC's albums sitting in your parent's or older siblings shelves (at least that's how I found them, thanks dad). Their classic rock sound is the kind that everyone can relate to on some level.
Favorite Album: "Narrow Stairs"
Best Lyric: And it's hard to want to stay awake, when everyone you meet, they all seem to be asleep, and you wonder if you're missing a dream
10) City and Colour
Calm, fun and eclectic. City and Colour is the band for you when you're feeling kind of spacey or dreamy. When you just want to zone out listen to some easy-going tunes.
Favorite Album: "Bring Me Your Love"
Best Lyric: While I'm off chasing my own dreams sailing around the world please know that I'm yours to keep my beautiful girl
