10 Truths About Your First Year Out Of College
Patrick Beznoska

Your first year out of college sure is eye-opening. You will have a lot of realizations about yourself and your life. Some are great, and some are harsh realities.

Here are 10 truths about your first year out of college:

1. You may struggle to find a job.

If you managed to snag a job from your internship, good for you. Yet, for most of us, finding a job is like fishing. Sending out what feels like hundreds of resumes and waiting for a potential employer to bite and ask for an interview can be difficult.

2. You may leave your first job for another.

It is 100% okay to leave a job if it does not align with your values. On paper, it may have seemed like a perfect match, but as time goes on, you'll see people's true colors. Have the courage to stand up and say you deserve better. After all, this isn't the last job you'll ever have.

3. You may still live at home with your parents.

There is nothing wrong with moving back home after college. If you are looking at it from a financial standpoint, this is a great way to gain some leverage for the future. It makes saving up a whole lot easier, that's for sure.

4. You will no longer be a night owl.

Staying up until 2 A.M. partying your eyebrows off is a thing of the past. You even wonder how you managed to do that in college and function properly the next day. You're lucky if you can keep your eyes open past 10 o'clock. Seriously, the struggle is so real.

5. You will become a morning person.

Yes, I can't believe it either. You'll even find yourself waking up early on the weekends and actually being productive. I'm talking brunch and morning walks, people!

6. You're going to have fomo...real bad.

Social media has this lovely ability to make you miss your college days even more than usual. You'll see your college friends hanging at your local college bar or just engaging in everyday shenanigans which will make you miss them. Give them a call, they miss you too.

7. You're going to focus on yourself.

You no longer have to worry about homework and studying for exams which means you now have more time for yourself. Time to find new interests and learn about yourself.

8. You're going to learn to live on a budget.

Want to go on vacation or buy the "good" groceries? There's a budget for that. You'll learn all about budgeting, especially if you're losing money every month to those pesky loans.

9. Those monthly loan payments absolutely suck.

An actual representation of me begging for my money back. Student loans are the reason your bank account is running dry. You may have even contemplated selling your kidney to ease some of the stress of paying off those bad boys.

10. Life goes on.

You're gonna have your hard times, and they will challenge you. It's how you handle those hard times to better yourself as a person that matters. You're also going to have great times. Just because college is over doesn't mean the fun is over.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
