We all know that one person -- the one that walks around campus in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt all year round. Maybe it’s because that’s simply his or her fashion taste, or perhaps it’s because he or she just doesn’t know how to dress appropriately throughout the winter. Here is a list of tips and trends that will not only help keep you warm during this long, cold winter season, but also on the cutting edge of fashion.
1. Wear boot cuffs instead of boot socks
Boot socks are a current cute trend in women’s fashion. They are cleverly designed so that just the top of the sock sticks out above the boot. But why not invest in a pair of just the boot sock tops, or cuffs? You can wear them over and over again with not as many washings, and you can adjust how high up you place them, depending on the boot height.
2. Keep a pair of gloves in all of your jackets
I don’t know how many times I’ve left my room wishing I hadn’t forgotten my gloves. If you stash a pair in all of your jacket pockets, your hands will never be cold again. This technique works well for men, too. Plus, a pair of really nice gloves will make you look and feel especially fancy.
3. Sport the knitted headband look
Knitted headbands are trendier than a winter hat and a good alternative to earmuffs -- because let’s face it, nobody looks cute in a pair of earmuffs. Invest in a bedazzled headband for just a touch more glamour.
4. Put on your texting gloves
Sometimes people don’t wear gloves because they know they can’t use their phone while wearing them. Texting gloves or gloves that are compatible with touchscreens, have been around for a few years now and are a great investment! From Five Below to North Face, they are available in different styles at various prices and levels of cuteness.
5. Heat up your hand warmers
When in doubt, you can always count on a pair of hand warmers to do their job. If you’re at an athletic event or outside for a long period of time, a pair of microwavable, reusable hand warmers will come in handy.
6. Wrap yourself in a blanket scarf
This is a fairly new addition to the winter wardrobe this season. Blanket scarves have the dimensions of a small blanket but are worn as large scarves. They make great statement pieces, too, and can even be used to keep your lap toasty in class.
7. Stay warm in your mitten gloves
Perhaps if you find you find gloves to be inconvenient, a pair of mitten gloves are more suited to you. Also called fingerless gloves, they have a detachable mitten finger top piece that easily comes on and off to accommodate your texting habits.
8. Borrow Mom's old puffer vest
Originally a trend of the '80s, these warm garments are back in style and are a fashion must-have. Wear one over a plain sweater or long sleep top for a pop of color.
9. Pair your scarves and jackets together
Do you ever walk outside and realize you totally forgot your fuzzy scarf? Instead, try storing your matching scarves and jackets on the same hanger to keep warm and coordinated. You’ll never make this mistake again!
10. Layer up
There’s no shame in shedding all of those layers when you get inside of a building. So what if you have a pea coat on top of a hoodie on top of a sweater? At least you’re not shivering.
Follow these tricks and trends and you will certainly have a successful winter season. And remember, these looks can be adapted for the male wardrobe, too! Stay warm and stylish.
