It's the best time of year in Louisville, Kentucky right now as the anticipation builds for the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby. As a daughter of a seasoned visitor and visited a few times myself to both The Oaks and The Derby, I think that I can offer a few tips. Whether you are from out of town or local, the Kentucky Derby is a once in a lifetime experience that I hope everyone has the opportunity to experience even if you are not a horse expert.
1. This event is a marathon, not a sprint.
Trust me, it is a long long day and it is very important that you pace your alcohol intake so that you can make it to the Derby race. Those mint juleps are expensive, but they are strong so be careful.
2. Leave the 5 inch stiletto heels at home.
I know those heels or wedges may make your legs look great, but the pain you will feel at the end of the day is not worth it. There is a lot of walking involved in this day; whether it be from wherever you can parking to the track or around the infield which can tend to get muddy with inclimate weather. If you do end up wearing heels or wedges you may want to think about bringing a pair of flats or flip-flops to relieve your feet.
3. Bet on the long shot.
I know when you know absolutely nothing about horses that it can be easy to bet on the horse that is favored to win, but I challenge you to bet on the long shot once in awhile. I've learned that you never know what can happen in horse racing and if you're lucky it may come with a good payout.
4. Plan for unpredictable weather.
Louisville weather can be unpredictable this time of year so it is important that you prepare well for it so you are not miserable.
5. Dress appropriately for the place you are sitting.
Your outfit will be very different if your seats are in millionaire's row versus the infield. Know where you are sitting and plan accordingly.
6. Be ambitious with your outfit.
This is a time where you can be very adventurous with your outfit and no one will judge you. So get those pretty pair of shoes that you want or that loud and proud hat. My motto is "the bigger the better" when it comes to hats; this event only happens once a year afterall.
7. Have a betting plan.
Many people swear by different anecdotes such as "grey horse on a grey day", betting based on the name or have a special number that you like to choose, like myself. Do not be afraid to ask questions about betting as there are many people willing to help.
8. Yes, it is possible to smuggle in booze.
My parents and their friends have many interesting stories of how they have gotten their own alcohol into Churchill Downs. I know you're probably "asking for a friend", but collapsable water bottles work very well.
9. Be ready for the crowds.
There a lot of people which can be very stressful, but be patient and use the buddy system.
10. Keep your purse closed.
Pick pockets can be rampant around the track so be watchful of your belongings.
The most important piece of advice I can give to you would be to have a good time and enjoy yourself. It is a fun filled day with friends, family and good drinks so enjoy it.
