So you just started at a new school, and you know you have years to go before you get to change up your daily schedule. Or perhaps you're coming home from college only to find that being home is way less exciting than the liveliness at school. Or maybe you started a new job a while ago, but now that the excitement has died down and you're so used to your day-to-day routine, you've become bored with life. Fear not. There are simple things you can do to add a little spice to your life. Here are ten:
1. Make A Change To Your Body
This by no means needs to be something extreme, but it also could be because you can do whatever the hell you want! You could add some blonde highlights to your brunette look, or you could dye your whole head neon pink. You could put in some extensions for hair that stretches down to your lower back, or you could chop it all off for a clean, fresh start. You could add a piercing to your ears or maybe get a belly button ring. You could get a small tattoo on your finger or a big one on your arm. The possibilities are endless, and any of these suggestions will make for a good insta.
2. Visit a Coffee Shop With Work or a Book
Whether you live in a small town or in a big city, there's bound to be a coffee shop on a street corner that you have yet to try. Go in, get a coffee that you've never ordered before, and chill in the coffee shop with that book you've been dying to read or that research paper you've been meaning to complete. A lot of coffee shops now serve avocado toast - a must try!
3. Text That Old Friend
I have come to find that a lot of people have old friends that they simply drifted from. There was no big blowout fight and no drama, life just got in the way and the connection was lost. Now that you have free time on your hands, this is the perfect time to text that old friend. You don't even need to get together in person (unless you want to, in which case a coffee shop is the perfect place for rekindling friendships as well!) Sometimes, though, just a simple "hey, I miss you. What have you been up to?" text from an old friend is enough to put a smile on someone's face and it'll spark a much-needed catching up conversation.
4. Read
Some people swear by reading books to pass time. I was recently hooked on "13 Reasons Why," because I plot intrigued me but the series was a little too much for me to handle. (I highly recommend this book if you refuse to watch the series or just haven't gotten around to it yet; it's much less graphic.) However, sitting down and reading 300 pages of fiction seems super boring to some people, which is totally understandable. Sometimes reading things online can be just as fun and interesting. Try following new blogs, such as NASA's tumblr page. It's filled with articles, facts, pictures, gifs, and full videos about space. BuzzFeed is constantly releasing new articles that are super interesting and attention-grabbing (even if they are irrelevant, you can always learn something new from them). Scrolling through Facebook, you can find millions of articles that people are sharing constantly. You can also read magazine's that fit your interest; whether it be sports or makeup, there are magazines for absolutely everyone, and most of them are available in stores or online.
5. Watch
If you're trying to stay away from the social media scene, there are so many things to watch on the internet as well. Try binge-watching Netflix series such as The Fosters, or movies on 123movies.com. If you're a musical theatre nerd, you can always find Broadway musicals if you do some searching via google, YouTube, or (probably the most efficient) tumblr. If you love music or if there is an award show coming up, you can always catch up on watching the newest, hottest music videos by searching the top music videos on the iTunes chart and then searching them on YouTube. If you want something a little more educational, there are plenty of fun, educational videos on YouTube as well, such as John Green's Crash Course History vids.
6. Explore
So many people say they hate to drive, but why? Roll down your windows, blast your favorite songs, and drive to somewhere you've never been before. Visit a new beach or try a new restaurant. One reason you're bored with life may be because you've lived in the same place for so long and you feel like you've done absolutely everything your town offers. Explore around a little, and I'm positive that can change.
7. Change Up Your Exercise Routine
Running for an hour on the treadmill every single day for years sounds just awful. If you swear by a treadmill, try an elliptical or a bike. If you swear by going to the gym every day after work, try taking a yoga or Pilates class instead of running. If you take class every single day, try going for a swim. If you hate exercising, maybe just go for a walk when you can find a nice day or go biking with a friend. Changing up your exercise routine can change your life if you give it a chance.
8. Change Up Your Meal Plan
You've packed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch at work every day for the past six years. Why? No matter how much you love your signature PB&J, enough is enough. Plus, variety is key to a healthy diet. Order a salad every once in a while. Try buying wheat bread (which is so much more flavorful!) instead of white bread, or rolls instead of slices. Indulge in some pasta every so often. Pack a protein bar for a snack, and mix those up too. Luna bars for Mondays and Tuesdays, Clif bars for Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Kind bars to end the week!
9. Take Chances
You've grown so used to your routine that if someone asks you to go to dinner with them on a Wednesday night, there is no way you'll say yes. But why? Dress up and go out! Follow the opportunities life throws at you and don't turn anything down before thinking about it. This is truly the key to a fruitful and happy life.
10. Stop Saying You'll Do It Tomorrow
Clean your house. Visit or at least call your parents/grandparents. (I'm sure they could offer you some greater advice than I ever could.) Fix what is bothering you. Although I encourage bingeing Netflix when you're bored, too much can lead to more boredom and sometimes even depression. Go out and make plans today. Leave your house even if it's just to walk around the neighborhood or drive through the local Dunkin' Donuts for a coffee. Do one thing every single day. This is how you really shake that boring life.
